News and Notes
| Holiday Dangers ... Beware of the danger of pancreatitis in your Sheltie especially during the holidays. With all the tempting foods on our human tables, it is also tempting to include your Sheltie in these treats. Pancreatitis is caused by too much rich food and a drastic change in diet. It can be fatal, so keep Laddie and Princess on their regular diet. You can add a bit of turkey (not the greasy skin) or stuffing to their food, but just a tiny bit. No bones!! Veggies are fine, but not prepared in a rich fashion (like that wonderful sweet potato/marshmallow casserole). Stick to plain veggies. What is tasty for us might be bad for our dogs.
Be careful with plastic wrap and aluminum foil - Shelties have been known to eat these right along with stolen leftovers. The front door opens and closes with lots of guests visiting. Keep an eye on your Sheltie so he doesn't slip out. To be safe, put him in a quiet room or keep him on a leash. Consider giving your Sheltie a quiet place where she can retreat if things get too loud or intense for her. _____________________
Want a new holiday treat for your Sheltie? Instead of worrying about those treats made in China, make your own. Here's a good recipe for Molasses Peanut Treats.
2 cups whole wheat flour
1 cup quick oats
1/2 cup wheat germ
3/4 cup water
1/2 cup chopped unsalted peanuts
1 tablespoon molasses
350º oven. Combine all ingredients until a firm dough forms. On a floured surface, knead the dough until it is firm. Roll out to 1/4 inch thickness. Cut with cookie cutter and place on baking sheet. Bake for 20 minutes. Turn off heat; let cookies stand in oven until hard, 1-2 hours. Sit! Down! Good Boy!!

Did you know that your vet can order a titer to check your Sheltie's immunity for various diseases like distemper, parvo, etc., rather than give a vaccine? Titering for immunity may cost more than giving that regular shot, but if your Sheltie is already immune, why load another vaccine on, especially if your dog is getting up in years. Ask your vet about doing a titer for immunity. _______________________ Another reason to avoid corn in your Sheltie's food... Because of the drought in corn growing regions, some of the crop is infected with a fungus called Aflatoxin. Pet food contaminated with this fungus is normally recalled promptly, but avoid it and its horrible effects by not purchasing dog food containing corn. More info ... |
