Come and see us ...

Saturday, June 2: Bark in the Park, Charles Town WV, 10 am to 2 pm
Come on out for a country drive. Bark in the Park is a smaller event sponsored by the Jefferson County (WV) Animal Shelter. We always meet lots of folks who say, "I used to have a Sheltie when I was growing up." Well, have another ... There will be lots to do - dog contests, raffles, demonstrations, blessing of the animals, etc. More information ... Saturday, June 9: Barrel Oak Winery, Delaplane VA, noon - 4pm
| OK - not a Sheltie, but a BOW dog |
Barrel Oak, a very dog-friendly winery, hosted us last year - right next to the front door. We will have several gorgeous Shelties there again this year. We'll also pass out coupons for tastings. For each coupon turned in at the tasting counter, we get half the tasting fee. Whoopee! More $$ for the Shelties, great wine, a lovely place to picnic. What more could you want for a terrific Saturday. Directions to the winery ...Saturday, September 22, NVSR Annual Picnic, Curtis Memorial Park, Hartwood VA, 11 am to 4 pmWe're just beginning our planning for this year's picnic, which will be bigger and better than ever! Plan now to come and meet LOTS of other adopters, our volunteers, our foster dogs, and best of all - Shelties everywhere! We'll have some new and interesting demos, and good food, as well. We hope to see YOU there. And, here are some pix from the Reston Pet Fiesta, May 5, and the Stephens City Canine Carnival, May 12.

News and Notes
| The deadline for photos for the 2013 NVSR calendar is coming up soon -- July 1, 2012! We're looking for interesting, seasonal, cute photos of rescued Shelties at play, at rest, having fun, and just being beautiful. You may submit them by
NVSR has four (yes, four!) heartworm (HW) positive Shelties in foster right now. They have come from all over the state, most of them turned in by owners who didn't give HW preventative to their dogs. Treatment for these dogs takes several months and is rather expensive. So, PLEASE keep your precious Sheltie(s) on preventative year-round! You can read about our HW+ dogs on our website. NVSR foster providers spent a day sharing information, experiences, and knowledge about caring for our foster dogs. Volunteer and foster coordinator, Lisa Fox, hosted the fostering workshop for 17 of our new and experienced foster providers on April 28th. Getting to know one another better was a high point. We even got to play with doggie puzzles. NVSR will sponsor more of these workshops to ensure that our foster dogs are given the best of care until they find their "furever" homes. | Biscuit and Tyler
| We are looking for submissions for the "Happy Tails" page on our website. We especially love those letters written by the dogs themselves. (They make such interesting comments about how they've trained their humans ... and they type so well!) If you'd like your news and photos to be included, send them to [email protected] and state that you want them included on the NVSR website. Recipe of the month: Cream Cheese Apple Surprise | Dink would like another one, please! |
2 c. whole wheat flour 4 oz. low fat cream cheese 1/2 c. unsweetened applesauce 1/2 c. vegetable oil 2 tsp. vanilla extract Combine all ingredients. Turn out on floured surface and knead until dough is firm. Roll dough to 1/2 in thickness. Cut with small round cookie cutter. Place cookies on baking sheet. Bake at 350 for 20 minutes. Turn off oven. Let cookies stand in oven 1-2 hours until firm. OK, you asked for it ... again. The Sheltie jigsaw puzzle online is fun. You can decide how difficult to make it, depending on how long you can put off your Sheltie begging for a walk. Here's the link: Sheltie puzzle online. |

"I will NEVER surrender. You CAN'T make me talk!"
We had several wonderful entries for a caption for Digby's cute photo, and this is the winner. It was close!
Anita McMahon submitted the winning caption. Digby is barking his congratulations, Anita! She'll be getting a nice shirt from our Sheltie Shop. Digby says, "Now I can get this silly octopus off my face."
