The deadline for photos for the 2013 NVSR calendar - yes, we are planning ahead - is July 1, 2012. We're looking for interesting, seasonal, cute photos of rescued Shelties at play, at rest, having fun, and just being beautiful. You may submit them by e-mail. The rules are attached.
Do you know how to get information quickly if you suspect your Sheltie has eaten something poisonous? It's the telephone call we hope you'll NEVER have to make, but be prepared! Keep this information readily accessible (on the fridge?). These organizations are available 24/7: ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (888-426-4435) Pet Poison Helpline (800-213-6680)
Need some new ideas for keeping that Sheltie mind busy and challenged? Here's a new book from Dogwise ... It's especially useful if your Sheltie spends hours alone. Dogwise always has a great selection of interesting books about everything from training to understanding canines. Sweet Potato Chews - A Sheltie Favorite! One (or more) large sweet potato, washed (leave the skin on)
1. Preheat oven to 250° 2. Line baking sheet(s) with parchment paper 3. Cut off one side of the sweet potato lengthwise, as close to the edge as possible. Turn the potato onto this flat surface to make it easier to cut the potato into slices. Don't discard that first piece; it comes out just as yummy as the rest! 4. Cut the potato into 1/3" thick slices, no thinner than 1/4" 5. Place them on the prepared baking sheet 6. Bake for 3 hours, turning over half way through 7. Cool completely on a wire rack. Although these treats are dried, keep them in the refrigerator for up to 3 weeks. They freeze them for up to 4 months. On April 28, the NVSR foster providers are getting together for a workshop, to share ideas, procedures, and experiences. This will be a valuable day for experienced foster providers, as well as new ones. If any adopter is seriously interested in becoming a foster provider, please let us know. We'd like to invite you to the workshop. | Oreo, our most expensive foster dog, using his new ramp

If you're interested in how we collect and spend our funds, the NVSR 2011 Annual Report is available. We depend heavily on donations to keep up with our expenses, since our adoption fees cover less than a third of the amount we spend to keep our foster dogs healthy.
We have a large number of seniors and permanent foster dogs, and will continue to have them well into the future. We will continue to pay their vet bills for a long time. In addition, we can never predict when one of our dogs will need extensive vet care. Read the 2011 Annual Report. Let us know if you have any questions. Please note that NVSR has a new address. It's a private mail collection service, so you MUST use the entire street and "PMB" number. This is just our mail pick-up point, and there are no dogs there!
