Support NVSR Through Payroll Deduction

Each year, NVSR participates in two payroll deduction fundraising drives. The Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) is conducted for Federal employees, and the Commonwealth of Virginia Campaign (CVC) facilitates State employee giving.

Thanks to your generous contributions, NVSR received almost $13,000 in donations from CFC and CVC combined last year.  If you're a Federal or Virginia employee, we hope you'll continue to contribute to NVSR.

CFCLogoCFC contributions are tax-deductible.  Look for NVSR on the list of organizations. Our participation number is: CFC #87105.  You can get more information from your workplace CFC coordinator or online. The sign-up campaign  extends to December 15.

ContribCVCLogoutions to CVC are also tax-deductible.  The NVSR number is: CVC #3974. The sign-up campaign is open until December 20. For more information, see your CVC coordinator or look

You always knew your Sheltie was smart.  Here's an interesting article about canine intelligence.  Shelties rank 'way up there, of course.

Interested in a few good books for holiday gift-giving?

  • The website ILikeDogs.com features a wonderful read-aloud children's book about rescue.  No sad stories!
  • Alexsandra Semyonova has written The 100 Silliest Things People Say About Dogs that debunks most of the myths that we're stuck with, due to outdated science and theories based on the dominance hierarchy. Each myth is something she's actually heard shelter personnel or therapy clients say. As the myths are addressed, she offers a different way of looking at what dogs are doing, based on complex self-organizing systems theory.
  • Speaking for Spot is a wonderful book filled with sensible information about canine health and how to work with your vet.  If you purchase and designate NVSR, we'll get some $$.
Are you feeding your Sheltie healthy foods?  Check out the website that rates pet foods.  In addition, look for the comparisons of dry and canned dog food in Whole Dog Journal.  This month's issue features an article on how canned dog food is made!

SheltieOrnamentNVSR has lots of new clothing items on our website "Sheltie Shop" just in time for the holidays - ask about our hoodies and bright (!) polo shirts.  Check them out and stock up.  We also have the Incolay ornaments and memorial urns and, of course, our brand new 2012 Sheltie rescue calendar.  You can also purchase our items on eBay.

If you do your holiday shopping online, go through one these portals and designate NVSR - we'll get a percentage of what you spend.  Thousands of stores are included in these portals - it's no cost to you, and we can get a GREAT benefit.!
And, don't forget to shop at Helping Udders and USBones.

Here's what we've been up to ...

NVSR had a nice booth at the Radford Highlanders Festival once again.  Terry Goodson made and sold special tartan bandanas, bringing in some big bucks for NVSR.  We love to attend these Scottish events;  our dogs are so loved by Scots - and everyone.

The 2011 picnic was a great success, even with the one week postponement. (Several dedicated folks came both Saturdays!) We had most of our foster dogs there, and the weather cooperated.  The free food (well, there were donation jars everywhere ...) was delicious, and Joy's tempting treats were for sale - very much appreciated. The live auction and raffle offered beautiful items and great values, and the adopter parade was heart-warming, as always. Our massage therapist and grooming expert were busy all afternoon, as was the photo booth. We had a nice rally demo, too. 89 Shelties (including the wannabes) and 110 humans attended. Many thanks to all who attended, especially the NVSR volunteers who did so much hard work.
You can see more photos on our Facebook page.
