Come to the NVSR Picnic - Sept 24th!

Skippy

Don't miss the fabulous annual NVSR picnic.  It gets better every year, and we always have a "barkin' good time". (And, don't we know that Shelties love to bark!)  Lots and lots of adopted Shelties, foster dogs, games, demonstrations (try out the agility equipment, how to groom your Sheltie,
canine first aid, etc.), raffle and live auction of great stuff, photos of your cutie, the Sheltie Shop, a Big, Big Adopter Parade, and much, much more.  Food?  We're working on that - we'll let you know.  We hope to see YOU there!

Date: September 24, 2011 -- Rain or shine!

Time: noon to 4pm

Location: Curtis Memorial Park, 58 Jesse Curtis Lane, Fredericksburg VA 22406 (Hartwood VA)

Brodie Goes to Law School

Brodie(1)Brodie has now been with us for more than six months.  He is a wonderful little dog, much loved.  We can't get over how accurate your assessment of him was for the short time he was with you-- a confident little dog, accomplished ball player, fussy about his water [he never drinks from public water dishes for dogs], loving walks, and especially going for a ride.  And we are well looked after, of course.

He is learning tricks as quickly as we can think them up.  Anything for a carrot.

Brodie(2)Brodie helps me with the gardening -- keen on pulling weeds -- and was a great success on his visits to the law school where I teach.  The secretaries in the dean's suite love to dogsit.   He had a great time playing with them, involving everyone in his games.   When I came to pick him up after my class I was told he was in a meeting!  The dean had taken him into a meeting in his office, and Brodie was sitting under the table, surrounded by administrators.  The dean, who has four dogs, pronounced Brodie "everything a dog should be."

Announcing Our New Program: Seniors and Special Needs Fostering

BoNVSR's Senior and Special Needs Permanent Foster Program was developed to provide a humane and caring home for our older or special needs dogs that shouldn't or can't be placed in adoptive homes. While these shelties may be frail, terminally ill, or disabled, we want each of them to be comfortable and loved in a stable home for the rest of their lives.

We realize that most of the Shelties in this program will need medications, special diets, therapy, and specialized treatments, along with love. We'll provide resources for the care, you provide a stable and loving home, and together we'll make each of these dogs feel special, no matter what they experienced earlier in life.

Dan and his new friend, Riley.

Animal behaviorist John Bradshaw's new book, Dog Sense: How the New Science of Dog Behavior Can Make You a Better Friend to Your Dog, details what dog owners should expect from their dogs ... and what dogs should expect from their humans.  Bradshaw has spent his career debunking bad advice given to dog owners.  Here's an article to read, and an NPR broadcast to listen to.

A very interesting discussion about vaccines: Part I, Part II, Part III, and Part IV

You've seen those skateboarding bulldogs on YouTube.  Now, watch a Sheltie at it - and doing much better, of course!

Welfare in Dog Training.  A very interesting site dedicated to explaining canine behavior and best ways to train using the dog's instinctual behavior.

Do you like jigsaw puzzles?  Try this one with a Sheltie on it.
