Measure what

Matters

From "The IT Service Provider Benchmarking Study", conducted in February 2013 by Decision Tree Labs on behalf of Autotask Corporation.

For IT service providers to benefit most from the power of measuring key performance indicators, they must understand which data points are most relevant to their businesses. Measuring areas that don't contribute to developing an understanding of the business, its strengths, weaknesses and growth potential, can divert time and resources better spent elsewhere.

Survey findings indicated that these five focus areas correlate with a positive impact on the business:

  1. Efficiency
  2. Predictability (e.g., planning, forecasting, recurring revenue)
  3. Employee utilization
  4. Client satisfaction
  5. Profitability

Welcome to our June newsletter. Summer is one of our favorite seasons for many reasons. There is often a slower pace and a break from the daily routine. That can provide multiple benefits, such as sparking one's creativity, and having time to develop ideas and work on longer-term goals that keep getting pushed back.

If you have been thinking about selling or merging your business someday, this might be a good time of year to start the process with an exit planning session, a go-to-market valuation, or a free consultation from one of our M&A advisors. Valuations are fairly strong for IT companies and we know lots of strategic and financial buyers that are searching for good companies.

M&A Trends

A recent article in M&A Today offered some observations concerning current and future M&A trends.

"The business world is constantly changing.  For the first half of the 20th century, vertical integration was the objective in which, oil companies, for example, owned the entire process from drilling to retailing at the gas station.  From 1950 to 1980, diversification was in vogue.  Recently, the trend is to outsource everything except the core business.  One of the new business models known as the new profit imperative is to go downstream and get closer to the ultimate customer."  Click here to read the entire blog...
