Malley Featured Speaker at 2016 Women's Bar Leader Summit
We were delighted that Nancy O'Malley shared with us at the Women's Bar Leadership Summit in August her suggestions on strategies for advocating through the legislative process. She challenged women lawyers to get involved in improving the justice system through elective office and through influencing legislation. In her words, "If you're not at the table, you're on the menu." To see the PowerPoint slides from her Summit presentation, click here.

How to Get Members Involved in Committees
|
Most women's bar leaders would agree that robust committees are essential to the health and efficacy of a membership organization. To prevent burnout by overextended volunteers, bring in innovative ideas, nurture new leadership and get the things done that your members want and need, members must be made welcome on committees. Putting brief descriptions of committees and their functions on an organization's website, along with contact information, is a great first step, but this typically isn't enough to encourage follow-up from more than the most determined potential volunteers. For links to committee descriptions, click here. Even though it is tempting to hand pick a few tried-and-true volunteers for each committee, part of managing a member organization is ensuring that members have a fair opportunity to get more deeply involved in the work of the organization.
One way to bring in new volunteers is to go beyond the written word and to hold an event such as the Colorado Women's Bar Association's Fall Social & Get Involved Event. The event is open to members and nonmembers alike. Even though many of the attendees may decide it isn't the right time for them to get involved in committee work, the open invitation to do so will be noted and appreciated.

NCWBA Listserves
|
The NCWBA maintains three separate listserves. Presidents and Presidents-Elect of our member associations are eligible for our Presidents Circle listserve. Executive Directors and those who take on primary administrative tasks for member organizations which do not have paid staff are eligible for our Executive Directors listserve. Anyone involved with women's bar associations as a leader or member may opt to join our NCWBA listserve on Yahoo Groups. This is an interactive list which is a great resource for referral requests, job announcements and other matters of interest to women's bar associations. To join this list, send us an e-mail with your name and the e-mail which you wish to use, describing your involvement in a women's bar association. Let us know if you know of people who wish to be added to any of our lists.
