June/July 2016
Women's Bar Leadership Summit
Please join us in San Francisco for our full-day Women's Bar Leadership Summit: Advancing Change through Innovative Collaboration, which will take place on Friday, August 5. Summit sessions will be held at the Bar Association of San Francisco. Hear from Pat Gillette and Katie Larkin-Wong on Harnessing the Power of Millennials. Alameda County District Attorney Nancy O'Malley, who will receive the Margaret Brent Women Lawyer of Achievement Award on August 7, will present ideas on advocating for change through the legislative process. A panel of in-house counsel, including Nicole Harris of PG&E, Gillian Thackray of The Clorox Company, and Suzette Torres of Fidelity National Title Group, moderated by the inimitable Dru Ramey, will explain how we can "amp up" the synergistic connections between in-house lawyers and women's bar associations. Caren Ulrich Stacey will share tips from the world's most innovative companies. As usual, we'll have time for attendees to share best practices from their own organizations. And we'll brainstorm about how to build on the GOOD Guys theme--"Guys Overcoming Obstacles to Diversity" in new ways.

Our Awards Luncheon, which is included in Summit registration, will once again take place in the memorable setting of the
City Club of San Francisco, which is a short walk from the Bar Association. We are delighted that our keynote speaker for our Awards Luncheon will be Kim M. Rivera, Chief Legal Officer and General Counsel of HP Inc. At the luncheon, member associations which have created notable programs will be honored. The 2016 Public Service Award winner is Georgia Association of Black Women Attorneys for their Youth Summit on Social Justice Issues. Lawyers Club of San Diego is the recipient of an Honorable Mention in this category for their Human Trafficking Task Force.  The winner of our 2016 Outstanding Member Program Award is California Women Lawyers for their program, Elect to Run. The Military Spouse JD Network is the recipient of an Honorable Mention for Justice for Military Families.

Awards Luncheon
We know that the ABA annual meeting is a busy time for many. If you can't attend our full Women's Bar Leadership Summit, consider joining us just for our Awards Luncheon in the beautiful setting of the City Club of San Francisco. Click here for registration information. Do not register with this link if you plan to attend the full Summit, as luncheon registration is included in the Summit registration.
Welcome Reception

Sedgwick LLP has invited us to their beautiful San Francisco offices to kick off our 2016 Summit with a reception on Thursday evening, August 4 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. This is a chance to meet old and new friends as you mingle over a glass of wine and light hors d'oeuvres with Summit attendees, local attorneys and other colleagues in town for the ABA annual meeting. There is no fee to attend, but we do ask for separate advance registration.
Best BigLaw Firms for Women?
Women in Law Empowerment Forum (WILEF) has once again ranked those firms with 300 or more lawyers practicing in the United States according to benchmarks intended to recognize those which offer the best opportunities for leadership and financial compensation. Click here to see the 31 firms which made the list.
Women in the Legal Profession
By the Numbers
Leaders of women's bar groups often need to make reference to the number of women law students, lawyers in private practice, judges or other categories of women in the legal profession. There is no one source with all the reliable numbers that you might need, but we have tried to make it easier for you by pulling together a variety of trusted sources in one place. Click here for the statistics page in the resources section of our website. There you will find the most recent update to the oft-cited reference from the ABA Commission on Women in the Profession: A Current Glance at Women in the Law, NAWL's Ninth Annual Survey on the Retention and Promotion of Women in Law Firms, and various other useful compilations. Let us know of other links we should include!
Considering Diversity in Program Planning
Leaders of women's bar associations are justifiably angry when they see CLE programs with multiple speakers in which there are no women. Excuses from planners and sponsors such as "We only wanted the top people in the field," or "There just aren't qualified women in this area of practice" only make things worse. But what about when women's bar associations plan programs--Do we get an automatic pass on considering diversity in our planning because our usual speakers are women? The ABA has now taken the position that all CLE programs sponsored or co-sponsored by the ABA must have members of diverse groups among their faculty, as evidenced by specific numbers based on the size of the panels or programs. Click here to download a copy of the policy.
Toolkits for Your Women's Bar
Need programming help for your association? Via the ABA Diversity & Inclusion Portal, you can find titles such as Power of the Purse: How General Counsel Can Impact Pay Equity, The Grit Project, Gender Equity in Partner Compensation, and many more.

And don't forget the NCWBA's GOOD Guys Toolkit!

NCWBA Listserves
The NCWBA maintains three separate listserves. Presidents and Presidents-Elect of our member associations are eligible for our Presidents Circle listserve.  Executive Directors and those who take on primary administrative tasks for member organizations which do not have paid staff are eligible for our Executive Directors listserve. Anyone involved with women's bar associations as a leader or member may opt to join our NCWBA listserve on Yahoo Groups.  This is an interactive list which is a great resource for referral requests, job announcements and other matters of interest to women's bar associations. To join this list, send us an e-mail with your name and the e-mail which you wish to use, describing your involvement in a women's bar association. Let us know if you know of people who wish to be added to any of our lists.
