Women's Bar Leadership Summit
Please join us in San Francisco for our full-day Women's Bar Leadership Summit: Advancing Change through Innovative Collaboration, which will take place on Friday, August 5. Summit sessions will be held at the Bar Association of San Francisco. Our Awards Luncheon, which is included in Summit registration, will once again take place in the memorable setting of the City Club of San Francisco, which is a short walk from the Bar Association. We are delighted that our keynote speaker for our Awards Luncheon will be Kim M. Rivera, Chief Legal Officer and General Counsel of HP Inc.

At the luncheon, member associations which have created notable programs will be honored. The 2016 Public Service Award winner is Georgia Association of Black Women Attorneys for their Youth Summit on Social Justice Issues. Lawyers Club of San Diego is the recipient of an Honorable Mention in this category for their Human Trafficking Task Force.  The winner of our 2016 Outstanding Member Program Award is California Women Lawyers for their program, Elect to Run. The Military Spouse JD Network is the recipient of an Honorable Mention for Justice for Military Families. Registration for the Summit is now open.

A small block of rooms has been reserved at the Omni San Francisco at the conference rate of $299 plus tax. To get this rate, you must book early and use this link. Not sure if you are the right person to attend the Summit? Click here for more information.

GOOD Guys Toolkit

Over the years, women's groups, both inside and outside the legal profession, have been frustrated by the notion that when we talk about diversity, we are "preaching to the choir." We see the same heads nodding in agreement when we talk about steps we need to take to ensure that everyone achieves their greatest potential in law firms and legal departments. At the same time, we know that men of good will have often made an important difference in championing and mentoring women lawyers. The GOOD Guys concept--Guys Overcoming Obstacles to Diversity--was born of the idea that we should recognize those efforts while providing additional tools to effect more change. The first GOOD Guys program was held in San Diego at the ABA Midyear Meeting. Click here for an article, including video clips, summarizing that event. Now we want to invite you to produce your own GOOD Guys program, making use of the toolkit provided here. Let us know your ideas and how you adapt the program to fit your own needs. A GOOD Guys session will be featured on June 7 in the Southern California Diversity and Leadership Conference in Long Beach.
Five Tips for Improving Diversity in the Legal World
Need more practical advice on how to stop talking about diversity and start taking action? Here are some quick tips from David Lat of Above the Law.
Committees--How Many, Why?
From time to time, whether as part of a review of bylaws, an update to the strategic plan or as a standalone effort, the number and purpose an association's committees should be reviewed. Committees that no longer function as initially intended can be a drag on an association, demoralizing volunteers and wasting valuable time. Who wants to volunteer as a member of a committee that doesn't ever seem to accomplish much? As the committee's value diminishes in the eyes of volunteers, absenteeism becomes greater, only magnifying problems.

Consider the sheer number of committees. Could consolidation be an answer? Could a temporary task force be a better solution? Click here to read a brief article on an approach which radically reduces the number of board committees.

Once you are satisfied that each committee serves an important purpose, integral to the smooth operation of the organization, make sure that each board member, staff member and association member knows where to get information about the committee and how committee assignments are made. To see links to women's bar association committee lists and descriptions and to read additional information about committees, click here.
US Supreme Court Vacancy--Judge Garland is No Closer to an

Up or Down Vote
The National Conference of Women's Bar Associations has joined in urging the Senate Judiciary Committee leadership to take action on the pending nomination of Judge Merrick Garland. For up-to-date information on federal judicial nominations and what you can do to encourage action on the Supreme Court nomination, see the resources provided by the National Women's Law Center.

It's Not Too Late To Become a Member
Thank you to all who have already sent in their dues for 2016. The organizations which have paid 2016 dues are listed in the left margin of this newsletter. Our membership year runs with the calendar year, which means that this is the right time to send in your organization's membership dues for 2016. Dues for 2016 have not increased, and are based on your organization's membership numbers. We rely on your membership dues and active participation in order to strengthen women's bar groups throughout North America. Click here to download a membership form to send in with your dues check. If you prefer to pay by debit or credit card, click here.
NCWBA Listserves
The NCWBA maintains three separate listserves. Presidents and Presidents-Elect of our member associations are eligible for our Presidents Circle listserve.  Executive Directors and those who take on primary administrative tasks for member organizations which do not have paid staff are eligible for our Executive Directors listserve. Anyone involved with women's bar associations as a leader or member may opt to join our NCWBA listserve on Yahoo Groups.  This is an interactive list which is a great resource for referral requests, job announcements and other matters of interest to women's bar associations. To join this list, send us an e-mail with your name and the e-mail which you wish to use, describing your involvement in a women's bar association. Let us know if you know of people who wish to be added to any of our lists.
