Public Service and Outstanding Member Program Awards
| |
From a strong field of nominations, we are pleased to single out a few programs to honor with the 2016 Public Service and Outstanding Member Program Awards. This year, the Awards Committee, chaired by Leigh-Ann Patterson Durant and Jeanne Marie Clavere, felt that the excellent programs of two additional groups should be recognized with Honorable Mentions.
The winner of our 2016 Outstanding Member Program Award is California Women Lawyers for their program, Elect to Run. The Military Spouse JD Network is the recipient of an Honorable Mention for Justice for Military Families.
These organizations will be honored at a special luncheon at the City Club of San Francisco during our Women's Bar Leadership Summit on August 5.

Women's Bar Leadership Summit
|
Plan now to come to San Francisco for our full-day Women's Bar Leadership Summit, which will take place on Friday, August 5. This year's theme is
Advancing Change through Innovative Collaboration. Summit sessions will be held at the Bar Association of San Francisco. Our Awards Luncheon will once again take place in the memorable setting of the City Club of San Francisco, which is a short walk from the Bar Association. A small block of rooms has been reserved at the Omni San Francisco at the conference rate of $299 plus tax. To get this rate, you must book early and use this link. Not sure if you are the right person to attend the Summit? Click here for more information.

Caren Ulrich Stacy, founder/CEO of the Diversity Lab and OnRamp Fellowship Program, and one of the presenters at our August 5 Women's Bar Leadership Summit, is a top 30 finalist in the Tory Burch Fellowship honoring women entrepreneurs. On-line voting will help determine the top ten fellows. Click here to learn more about her and to register your vote (up to one per day through April 22). The upcoming Women in Law Hackathon is also the brainchild of Caren Ulrich Stacy.

Next OnRamp Fellowship Deadline is April 18
|
The OnRamp Fellowship matches women re-entering the legal workforce with law firms, legal departments, and financial services firms for paid positions ranging from six months to one year in duration. Currently there are more than 225 fellowship positions in 32 US cities. Plans are in the works to expand the program to Australia and the UK.

US Supreme Court Vacancy and
Women's Bar Associations
|
With the nomination by President Obama of Judge Merrick Garland on March 16 to fill the Supreme Court vacancy left by the death of Justice Antonin Scalia, it is now left to the Senate Judiciary Committee to convene hearings on his qualifications and give him an up-or-down vote. It was made clear, even before the nomination of Judge Garland, by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and others that no action on the nomination is planned. The partisan nature of the inaction has caused many state and local bar associations to shy away from public discussion of the matter. Yet lawyers are uniquely qualified to understand and explain the importance of separation of powers, constitutional duties and the barrier to the fair administration of justice posed by judicial vacancies. In this instance, silence can be viewed by the Senate and the public as consent by the legal community to the Senate's inaction. As a women's bar leader, what can or should you do?
As individuals, you can write to your own Senators, urging them to support an up-or-down vote on the nomination. Here is an e-mail form created by the National Women's Law Center (NWLC). Or you may wish to pattern your letter after the template provided here by the NWLC.
Here are some examples of letters and press releases from bar organizations:

| Why Join a Women's Bar Group? |
In order to explain the unique value of organizations that promote the interests of women lawyers, it's important for leaders of women's bars to write about their own experiences. We'd love to get your ideas on the topic. Share them with us. Here are some thoughts from a member of the Canadian Bar Association's Women Lawyers Forum. It's Past Time to Send in Dues for 2016
|
Thank you to all who have already sent in their dues for 2016. The organizations which have paid 2016 dues are listed in the left margin of this newsletter. Our membership year runs with the calendar year, which means that this is the right time to send in your organization's membership dues for 2016. Dues for 2016 have not increased, and are based on your organization's membership numbers. We rely on your membership dues and active participation in order to strengthen women's bar groups throughout North America. Click here to download a membership form to send in with your dues check. If you prefer to pay by debit or credit card, click here.

NCWBA Listserves
|
The NCWBA maintains three separate listserves. Presidents and Presidents-Elect of our member associations are eligible for our Presidents Circle listserve. Executive Directors and those who take on primary administrative tasks for member organizations which do not have paid staff are eligible for our Executive Directors listserve. Anyone involved with women's bar associations as a leader or member may opt to join our NCWBA listserve on Yahoo Groups. This is an interactive list which is a great resource for referral requests, job announcements and other matters of interest to women's bar associations. To join this list, send us an e-mail with your name and the e-mail which you wish to use, describing your involvement in a women's bar association. Let us know if you know of people who wish to be added to any of our lists.
