Networking For Good
|
Last month's newsletter focused on "speed networking" events for your women's bar. Although speed networking can provide a fun jump-start, true networking is relationship building, best done in a less frenetic setting. Consider hosting an event in a member's home or in a comfortable community space which accommodates quiet conversational groups. A focus on a common interest other than the law can be a way of lessening concern about differences in age, practice area and experience and lead to more emphasis on personal connections. A good fit for women's bar associations may be "Tewa Teas." Tewa Teas support the work of Dhaka Weaves, a nonprofit which sells the beautiful textiles produced by Nepali women weavers. As attendees wrap themselves in handcrafted textiles, they watch a brief DVD and listen to the story of the women weavers of Nepal. Afterwards, they may purchase the textiles. For more information on hosting a Tewa Tea, click here.
For a more active event, how about joining with another professional women's group or other bar associations in your region to do a Habitat for Humanity build? Click here see what the leadership of members of the North Carolina Association of Women Attorneys has created in Asheville. If taking a leadership role sounds too ambitious, how about asking your members to help with a Habitat build for a half day? Hawaii Women Lawyers did just that.
Let us know how your women's bar association "networks for good."

The OnRamp Fellowship and The Challenge of Easing Re-Entry to the Profession
|
|
Women's bar networks are buzzing about the OnRamp Fellowship, an innovative new program which will allow select attorneys who have stepped out of practice for at least two years to apply for a one-year, paid training contract at one of four nationally known law firms. In addition, those chosen for the fellowships will receive significant career guidance and access to resources. Deadline for submission of applications is Friday, March 7. To read more about this path-breaking project, click here.
What programs can your women's bar association implement to help get your members who are seeking to re-enter the profession back on track? Workshops on resume and cover letter writing are helpful, but a number of members will appreciate a more comprehensive approach. The Women Lawyers Division of the Law Society (UK) has offered a "returner course" for many years. Click here to read the extensive agenda for this year's program.

Register Now for the NAWL Mid-Year Meeting
The Mid-Year Meeting of the National Association of Women Lawyers (NAWL) will be March 19-20 in Washington, DC. Keynoting the meeting will be Kathy Ruemmler, who since 2011 has served as White House Counsel. Following her keynote, a panel, including NCWBA board member Monica Parham, will address the topic Navigating in a Majority Environment: Clearing the Hurdles to Success. Click here for the complete agenda.
Save the Date--Friday, August 8
It's not too soon to reserve your hotel room at Boston's Nine-Zero Hotel, where we have a special rate for those planning to attend our 2014 Women's Bar Leadership Summit on Friday, August 8. As the date nears, good rates for Boston hotel rooms will become harder to find, so take time to make your reservation now. The Summit will be at Suffolk University Law School, in the heart of downtown Boston. The Awards Luncheon will take place at the Boston College Club, a short walk away. We will have more details soon about our speakers and programming, but we can promise opportunities to be inspired, to network with women's bar leader colleagues from across North America and to get great ideas for ways to make your women's bar association or section more responsive to the needs of your members.

Writing Your President's Message
Are you having trouble coming up with a president's message for your newsletter or website? Try personalizing a topic you know is of interest to your membership, as Lawyers Club of San Diego President Johanna Schiavoni did in the Lawyers Club February newsletter. Want more inspiration? Click here.
Shattering the Echo Chamber
The NCWBA special events and programming committee has initiated a program called "shattering the echo chamber," with the purpose of developing programming to help women's bar organizations involve more men, particularly men in managing partner-level positions, within our member organizations in order to better and more quickly address women's issues and advance women lawyers. To help the committee determine what programming will be most effective, we would appreciate just a few minutes of your time to answer a brief survey.
On February 8, NCWBA board members and friends joined with the Coalition of Women's Initiatives in Law and the Women's Bar Association of Illinois for an enjoyable afternoon tea hosted by the Chicago offices of Polsinelli. _____________________________________________________ NCWBA Listserves
The NCWBA has three listserves. The [email protected] listserve is an interactive list which is a great resource for breaking news, brainstorming, job announcements or referral requests. Membership is limited to those who are involved with women's bar associations as a leader or member. To join this opt-in only list, send an e-mail describing your involvement. In an effort to reduce spam, Yahoo Groups recently imposed a requirement that all members be added by accepting invitations to join. Instructions for joining the group will be sent to those opting in. Two other listserves are hosted directly by NCWBA, so we are able to add e-mails upon request without further steps. These two groups are for current presidents or incoming presidents of member organizations only and for executive directors (or those volunteers who perform administrative functions for member associations) only. All listserves are opt-in only, so please contact us if you would like to join any of these.
