December 2013
Program Ideas for 2014 from the Women's Bar Leadership Summit

At the 2013 Women's Bar Leadership Summit, attendees were tasked with brainstorming to come up with original program ideas to address the three main themes of the Summit: Advancing Gender Equity in Legal Practice, the Judiciary and Society.  Discussion moderators were Pam Berman (NCWBA Immediate Past President; Women's Bar Association of Massachusetts), Jeanne Marie Clavere (Washington Women Lawyers), Cynthia Ouzts (South Carolina Women Lawyers Association), Sherrie Phillips (Alabama State Bar Association Women Lawyers Section) Kathleen Rastetter (Oregon Women Lawyers) and  Patricia Sturdevant (Women Lawyers of Sacramento; California Women Lawyers and NCWBA board member).  As equal pay in the legal profession was a topic raised by many of the speakers, it is perhaps not a surprise that several of the programs addressed this issue: Pay Equity Pledge (PEP) Program, A Toolkit for Negotiating Your Worth at Work Program, and Diversity Pays: A Conversation with Business Leaders. Two programs addressed increasing diversity on the bench, one by developing a pipeline program for law students, and the other with a focus on the federal bench. A sixth program proposed a Lecture Series of Six Sessions, leading to certification of firms or organizations as a "Five Star Award Winner for Gender Equity."

Take the ideas that best fit the energy and resources of your volunteers, adapt them as appropriate and let us know your suggestions about what works.  We will share your programs with other women's bar associations and sections.  And who knows, maybe your adaptation of one of these ideas will get national recognition with the NCWBA Public Service or Outstanding Member Program Award!

Joan Williams led off the morning session at our 2013 Women's Bar Leadership Summit.  Click here to read recent comments she made in the Washington Post regarding millennial women and their attitudes toward equal pay and advancement.

2014 Public Service and Outstanding Member Program Award Nominations Deadline is January 31

Take time now to think about the programs and services that made a difference to the public or your membership in 2013.  Each year the NCWBA honors one or more members' programs which serve the public or the members' own membership in ways that are particularly unique or noteworthy.  Shining a spotlight on these programs honors the volunteers who make them a success and makes a difference nationwide as other groups adapt programs for their own associations.  The deadline for submission of this year's awards, which will be presented in Boston on August 8, is Friday, January 31. Click here for more information, examples of previous award submissions, and a downloadable nomination form.

 Save the Date--Friday, August 8

It's not too soon to reserve your hotel room at Boston's Nine-Zero Hotel, where we have a special rate for those planning to attend our 2014 Women's Bar Leadership Summit on Friday, August 8.  As the date nears, good rates for Boston hotel rooms will become harder to find, so take time to make your reservation now.  The Summit will be at Suffolk University Law School, in the heart of downtown Boston.  The Awards Luncheon will take place at the Boston College Club, a short walk away. We will have more details soon about our speakers and programming, but we can promise opportunities to be inspired, to network with women's bar leader colleagues from across North America and to get great ideas for ways to make your women's bar association or section more responsive to the needs of your members.

The Invisible War--Friday, February 7

Join the Women's Bar Association of Illinois and the NCWBA  on Friday, February 7 at 5:30 pm for a free showing of the film, The Invisible War, an award-winning documentary about sexual assault in the US military.  The film will be followed by a discussion led by Professor Felice Batlan.  The screening will take place at IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law, 565 W. Adams Street. Advance registration is not required.

NCWBA Listserves

The NCWBA has three listserves. The NCWBA@yahoogroups.com  listserve is an interactive list which is a great resource for breaking news, brainstorming, job announcements or referral requests. Membership is limited to those who are involved with women's bar associations as a leader or member.  To join this opt-in only list, send an e-mail describing your involvement.  In an effort to reduce spam, Yahoo Groups recently imposed a requirement that all members be added by accepting invitations to join.  Instructions for joining the group will be sent to those opting in.  Two other listserves are hosted directly by NCWBA, so we are able to add e-mails upon request without further steps. These two groups are for current presidents or incoming presidents of member organizations only and for executive directors (or those volunteers who perform administrative functions for member associations) only. All listserves are opt-in only, so please contact us if you would like to join any of these.

 Congratulations!

On December 13, Robin Burrell, the first chair of the Women Lawyers Section of the Birmingham Bar Association became President of the Birmingham Bar Association.  Robin Burrell was the founding chair of the section, which will be celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2014.  Robin Burrell is the fourth female to be elected president of the Birmingham Bar Association's 128-year history.

NCWBA's own past president (2011-2012) Cezanne Jeanne "Cezy" Collins is now General Counsel of the El Paso Independent School District.

Sponsorship, Unconscious Bias and Power

Even the most well-thought-out mentor programs can only go so far in moving towards equal opportunities in law firms, corporations and voluntary associations. Increasingly, the discussion has moved to the concept of sponsorship in helping to overcome unconscious bias and remove barriers for advancement.  Click here for a useful article on the topic.  Are there ways in which your women's bar association can incorporate the idea of sponsorship into developing tomorrow's leaders?
