Cold. Cold. Cold. It's like a broken record. An extreme cold it has been. Will it ever end? February has surely left us with a roar. Let's hope March comes in and leaves like a lamb. But the elements have never stopped the revelers celebrating St. Patrick's Day. The one day everyone is Irish. Look for the Irish stew recipe in this newsletter. It will surely warm your bones.

The month of March has no shortage of national official or unofficial observances. From the truly deserved to the - who makes this stuff up? Which ones will you be celebrating? Here's a short list: National Nutrition Month, Women's History Month, Optimism Month, Red Cross Month, National Kite Month, Noodle Month, National Name Tag Day, National Open An Umbrella Indoors Day, and finally you can wish complete strangers a "Happy Awkward Moment Day".

...And looking ahead to April, it's National Plumbers Month. Seriously, I'm not making this up. So thank an Aiello plumber on the 25th or any day of the year. It's very much appreciated.

New Water Heater Regulations

The U.S. Department of Energy has mandated changes to water heaters manufactured after April 15, 2015.

The results will be:

>> Higher priced units - up to 35% more expensive

>>  Larger units - 2" taller and 2" wider, and in some cases units many       be even larger

>> More complicated installation requirements

>>  Possible significant home remolding costs if your water heater is           located in a closet, or attic space

What does this mean for you?

If your water heater is 10 years old or older you should seriously consider replacing it now before the prices go up.

The average lifespan of a water heater is between 8-12 years. If your water heater is getting on in age, you may want to consider replacing it now before new regulations take effect.

Ice Dams

This winter's weather has been brutal on New Englanders. One just has to look up at the gutters of homes and there you see them - icicles. They may look beautiful but sometimes they are a sign of bigger problems like ice dams. Ice dams can cause water damage inside the home.

  • Icicles that hang from your home's gutters are the kind that you need to monitor. If you have inadequate insulation or improper ventilation in your roof and soffits, the heated air will escape through the roof and melt the snow. As the melted snow hits the cold gutters, it turns to ice, creating an ice dam.
  • If there is no heat to remove that ice, then the ice continues to build and creates extremely long icicles. The icicles and ice dam add weight to your gutters that could tear the gutters from the house, causing significant damage. The ice can also get under your shingles and begin to leak inside your home, causing water damage.
  • Reduce icicles in your gutters by having the insulation in your home analyzed by a professional contractor. The contractor will let you know how much insulation you need.
  • Heat tape inside your gutters and along the edge of your roof can also help to prevent ice dams and icicles. Heat tape wraps an electrical wire around water pipes and the wire can be heated. Since heat tape is tricky stuff, hire a pro to install it to make sure it's done properly.
  • Don't try using a hammer or rake to knock large icicles off your gutters or remove ice dams. Hitting the ice in your gutters with a hammer will cause more pressure on your gutters and could make the gutters collapse. Large icicles can be unpredictable when they fall, causing injury to you or damage to your home.

prevent ice dam leaks The most effective way to eliminate ice dams is to stop snowmelt by making the roof colder. This can be achieved by insulating the floor of the attic and under the roof, and by blocking all crevices where warm air from the interior can rise into the attic.

If possible, keep snow off the roof with a snow rake. Use a roof rake or push broom to reduce the amount of snow that could melt. Do not climb on the roof to clear the snow as serious injury may result. Also, be cautious of electrical wires.

St.Patrick's Day - Tuesday, March 17th

New Hot Water Heater Savings CT

How did the green beer become such a staple of St Patrick's Day?
As the story goes, someone slipped a clover into one's drink for good luck some time ago. Whether it is true or not, the first recorded incident of beer turning green occurred in New York City in 1914.

It was a typical St. Patrick's Day at the Schnerer Club in New York City. The festivities kicked off with ringing of a large green bell, everything was either green or decorated with green, the booze flowed and Irish songs were being pelted out with drunken enthusiasm--in short it looked to be another typical and successful event. Until Dr. Curtin, a Coroner's physician, presented the group with his contribution to the night....bright and vibrant green beer.

A reporter from The Evening Independent was present at the event and, along with others in the club, asked the good doctor how he was able to give the fermented beverage such a fitting effect. The doctor simply stated it was one drop of Wash Blue in a undisclosed quantity of beer. (Note, from what we can tell Wash Blue appears to be a bluing agent possibly used for dying fabrics/textiles--probably not what you want to use to turn you beer green this year). The reporter later wrote an article about his discovery which was featured in his newspaper in the March 26th, 1914 issue.

To make a green beer fitting of Dr. Curtin and the Schnerer Club it isn't green food coloring you need to add to the beer, similar to the doctor's recipe from above, the key is blue coloring.  Blue and yellow make green and as such adding blue food coloring to your beer with create a lively and vibrant green beer worthy of any St. Patrick's day reveler. Be careful though, one or two drops go a long way.

Turning the Chicago River green actually started by the city to detect illegal sewage dumping. Plumbers ( let's give a shout out to plumbers ) put fluorescein dye in the river which turned bright green if toxic sludge was detected. 50 years later, a harmless orange vegetable dye creates the green hue. Here is how it's done today.

Irish Stew

Irish stew is a filling, flavorful peasant dish traditionally made of lamb or mutton, potatoes, onions and parsley. Sometimes lamb or mutton neck bones, shanks and other trimmings were the only basis for the stock. The perfect comfort food during the cold winter months. If you've never tried making it, this winter may be a good time to start.

Ingredients

* 2 medium-sized onions, chopped

* Oil, for frying

* 1 -ounce butter

* 1 sprig dried thyme

* 2 1/2 pounds best end of lamb neck, cut into large pieces

* 7 carrots, chopped lengthways into 2-inch pieces

* 2 tablespoons pearl barley

* 5 cups chicken stock, recipe follows

* Salt (recommended: Fleur du Sel)

* Freshly ground black pepper

* 1 bouquet garni (parsley, thyme, and bay leaf)

* 12 medium potatoes

* 1 bunch parsley, leaves finely chopped

Serving suggestion: herb butter, recipe follows

 Directions:

In a large heavy-bottomed saucepan, cook the onions in oil and butter, on medium-high heat until they are translucent. Add the dried thyme and stir. Add the lamb and brown on a high heat to seal in juices. Add carrots, and pearl barley. Pour in the chicken stock so that it almost covers the meat and vegetables. Season with salt and pepper, and add Bouquet garni. Cover and cook on low heat for 2 hours, being careful not to boil. Place potatoes on top of the stew, cover and cook for 30 minutes until the meat is falling beautifully off the bones and the potatoes are fork tender.

Serve the stew in large flat soup bowls, and drizzle herb butter over the potatoes or garnish with parsley and chives.
