Baby It's Cold Outside. Brrrrr.... It's here. Winter. Be thankful you don't live in Buffalo! Yet, snow is coming. Time to get the shovels and snow blowers ready, and of course making sure you won't be without power this winter. But, more about that later.

December is a time of holiday cheer. Family get-togethers. Office parties. Food drives. Clothing drives. Ugly sweater contests. And of course The Nutcracker ballet. A family favorite especially with young children. Little soldier boys in battle with mice. Little girls dreaming of being Clara. Tchaikovsky's music. The beautiful production, the costumes and of course

the dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy and the Nutcracker Prince.

So, during this time of year give the gift of giving. Give what you can to local food banks. Donate winter clothing, especially for children. Many of them stand out in the cold waiting for school buses not in a warm idling car.

The "Best" Gingerbread Cookie Recipe

Preheat oven 350 / Bake approx 6 - 8 mins

Cream

1 1/4 cups Butter

1 1/2 cups Brown Sugar

Add to above and beat till well mixed

1 cup Molasses

2 Eggs

4 tsp Vanilla

1 Tbl Grated Fresh Ginger

Whisk all ingredients below and add to above / DO NOT OVERWORK

6 cups Flour

1 Tbl Baking Powder

1 1/2 tsp Baking Soda

1/2 tsp Salt

1 Tbl Ginger ground

4 tsp Cinnamon

1/2 tsp Cloves

Roll out in sheets 1/4 inch thick and cut out into desired shapes

Bake and Enjoy!

Spin the Dreidel

Playing with the dreidel is a traditional Hanukkah game played in Jewish homes all over the world, and rules may vary. Here's how to play the basic dreidel game:

1. Any number of people can take part in this great game.

2. Each player begins the game with an equal number of game pieces (about 10-15) such as pennies, nuts, chocolate chips, raisins, matchsticks, etc.

3. At the beginning of each round, every participant puts one game piece into the center "pot." In addition, every time the pot is empty or has only one game piece left, every player should put one in the pot.

4. Every time it's your turn, spin the dreidel once. Depending on the outcome, you give or get game pieces from the pot:

a) Nun means "nisht" or "nothing" [in Yiddish]. The player does nothing.

b) Gimmel means "gantz" or "everything" [in Yiddish]. The player gets everything in the pot.

c) Hey means "halb" or "half" [in Yiddish]. The player gets half of the pot. If there is an odd number of pieces in the pot, the player takes half of the total plus one.

d) Shin, outside of Israel means "shtel" or "put in" [in Yiddish]. Peh, in Israel means "pay." The player adds a game piece to the pot.

5. If you find that you have no game pieces left, you are either "out" or may ask a fellow player for a "loan."

6. When one person has won everything, that round of the game is over!

Hanukkah is a Jewish holiday celebrated for 8 days and nights. This year it takes place Dec.16 - 24.
