Fall is here. We know because there are a billion leaves threatening to fall. Ahhh, leaves. So much anticipated in March; so appreciated as their shade makes the heat bearable in August; so magnificent when they turn those brilliant shades of red and yellow. But then...they're on the ground. Under foot. Clogging the lawn mower and requiring stuffing 50 bags to leave by the curb! We so lament the lost tradition of a bonfire of leaves - both the sight and that fabulous aroma. Is there anyone out there planning a big (legal) one? If so... drop us a line. We'd bring the marshmallows just to enjoy it one more time. And now on with the show... |

 Cindy Nicewicz, who heads up our food bank collections, delivered donations to Miles Hubbard of St. Justin's Food Pantry last year. We hope to be back again this year - with your help. The Longlist for the National Book Awards - Fiction
October means a return to the good book. You choose.
The National Book Foundation announced the 2013 National Book Award longlist for fiction, and among them are four National Book Award winners and finalists, a Pulitzer Prize winner and finalist, recipients of a MacArthur Foundation fellowship and a Guggenheim fellowship, and a debut novelist. Thomas Pynchon and Jhumpa Lahiri and Anthony Marra are under consideration.

Love Can Last Forever.
Just a reminder that even in death you can't separate those in love.
These are the graves of Colonel J.C.P. H. of Aeffderson and Catholic noblewoman J.W.C Van Gorkum. They were married in 1842. In 1888, Ms. Van Gorkum died. She had wanted to be buried next to her husband. Pillarisation (a form of religious and political segregation in Holland) was still in effect at the time, and according to the law, this was impossible.
Ms.Van Gorkum was buried on the other side of the wall, which was the closest she could get to her husband. But with some creative stone work, husband and wife were linked together eternally.
