When we started At Home we want it to be free-ranging and guilt-free.
That is - a romp through a vast array of non-essential, smile-inducting, "who-knew?" wackiness. To that end, we've dedicated this issue to all things non sequitural. Nothing matches. Nothing makes the slightest bit of rational sense. (Except of course, all Aiello sales and service offers, to which we would never begin to ascribe absurdity!)

Who Is This?
I confess, you think this stuff is for the birds. You'd have to be a psycho to try guessing who the mystery person is each month.  It'd be easier to catch a thief or meet a stranger on a train than to figure out the identity of this month's secret agent. It isn't anyone named Rebecca or Mr. and Mrs. Smith, we can tell you that.We do have a suspicion that within a shadow of a doubt, you know who this famous guy is. So, I'll sit 39 steps from my rear window, work myself up into a frenzy spinning my topaz ring, wishing you a fond bon voyage and check my e mail for your answer and a chance to win a $25 iTunes card. I should be notorious after this!

What We Are Reading
A 22-page micro-book, entitled Shiki no Kusabana (flowers of seasons), contains names and monochrome illustrations of Japanese flowers. It is on sale with a magnifying glass, and seen here next to a needle tip.

In a new study, published in The International Journal of Obesity, researchers at Harvard and elsewhere followed 420 overweight men and women in Spain in a 20-week weight loss program.

The subjects were split into two groups. Each followed a similar diet, got equivalent amounts of sleep, and had similar caloric intakes and expenditures. But there was a critical difference in the timing of their main meal of the day, which in this case, because of the Mediterranean setting, was lunch. In both groups, the meal comprised about 40 percent of their daily calories. But one group consistently ate it before 3 p.m. daily, while the other did so after 3 p.m. By the end of the study, despite similar caloric intakes, the late eaters had lost significantly less weight. They also showed lower insulin sensitivity, which increases the risk of diabetes. Weight loss strategies, the authors wrote, should focus not just on calories and nutrients, "but also the timing of food."

Sunday Lunch
 Our friends at Seriouseats.com (a great food blog) are suggesting a refreshing take on early season crab. Try their Crab with Tomato and Chilies - but enjoy it early in the day. Then take a nice long walk! Ingredients -
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
-
3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, divided
-
3 medium cloves garlic, minced (about 1 tablespoon)
-
1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes
-
1 (28-ounce) can whole peeled tomatoes, drained and roughly broken up by hand
-
1/3 cup heavy cream
-
1/4 cup vodka
-
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
-
1 small red hot chili, finely sliced
-
2 slices rustic bread or 1 English muffin, roughly torn
-
2 tablespoons minced fresh chives
-
2 tablespoons minced fresh parsley leaves
-
1 pound fresh spaghetti, fettucini, or tagliatelle (dry pasta can also be used)
-
1 pound lump or jumbo lump fresh crab meat
Procedures Heat butter and 2 tablespoons olive oil in a medium saucepan over medium heat until melted and foaming subsides. Add garlic and red pepper flakes and cook, stirring constantly, until fragrant but not browned, about 1 minute. Add tomatoes and heavy cream. Bring to a boil, reduce to a simmer, and cook, stirring occasionally, until lightly reduced, about 10 minutes. Add vodka and simmer for 4 minutes longer. Transfer mixture to jar of blender and blend on high speed until completely smooth. Season to taste with salt and pepper and transfer 2 cups to a large saucepan. Reserve remaining sauce for another use. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Combine bread and remaining olive oil the the work bowl of a food processor. Process until fine crumbs are formed. Transfer to a medium skillet and cook over medium-high heat, stirring and tossing constantly until golden brown. Transfer to a small bowl. Season bread crumbs to taste with salt and pepper and add a pinch of parsley and chives. Toss to combine. Set aside. Add crab and sliced chilies to saucepan with sauce and stir to combine. Cook spaghetti in boiling salted water just until it is barely cooked through, about 2 minutes (if using dry pasta, cook according to package directions). Drain pasta, reserving 1 cup of cooking liquid. Transfer pasta to saucepan with sauce stir in remaining herbs. Heat over high heat until sauce is simmering and pasta is completely coated, adding reserved pasta water as necessary to thin sauce to desired consistency. Serve immediately, topping with bread crumbs. |
