Letter from the Executive Director
Welcome to the New Year! My hope for us all is that 2015 brings us joy and time to relax, greater wisdom as we take on new opportunities, personal growth as we overcome challenges, and caring relationships as we find strength through our NAMI community. What I hope for NAMI Butler County is continued growth in volunteers, programs, presentation requests and innovative ideas to make NAMI BC even more visible and more effective for those who need our services. I know that we can work together to make this happen!
To help us, you'll be seeing a new face around the NAMI offices in January. Missy Boggio is a graduate nursing school student at Vanderbilt University in the RN-MSN Pediatric Nurse Practitioner-Acute Care program. She has been a newborn/pediatric nurse for 13 years and is currently a Newborn Pediatric flight nurse at Cincinnati Children's Hospital. Missy will be helping us develop more comprehensive Children and Adolescents programming for individuals and their caregivers, as well as working on other projects, during her practicum. Missy is going to be a great addition to our NAMI community.
In place of our March Education Meeting, our Annual Awards Dinner will take place on March 18th at the Courtyard by Marriott in Hamilton. The dinner is open to the public and tickets will be sold to help cover event costs (this is not a fundraiser). We are revamping the event and moving it from November to March in order to better highlight the importance NAMI BC places on the programs, services and quality of care that our loved ones receive. We are expanding the number of awards that will be presented to include not only direct service care providers for mental health consumers but also those who work with this population in the justice system, support services and management. We will be contacting agencies, justice departments, hospitals and our NAMI membership seeking nominations for the awards. All nominations will be reviewed by NAMI staff and Board members and the final candidates will be voted on by our current membership. We look forward to celebrating everyone's hard work and dedication!

Number of Teams: 41
Number of Teams Raising over $1,000: 10 Number of Teams Raising over $2,000!: 5

We want to say a HUGE thank you to all of our amazing team captains, donors, sponsors, volunteers and walkers who participated in this year's NAMIWalk! Aside from 2014's Walk being the highest grossing Walk yet, we also increased the number of teams participating to above our goal of 40 teams - meaning more people than ever participated in raising awareness of the mental health needs in our county. Your support allows us to continue to provide programs and referrals to the community, to advocate for continued improvements in mental health legislation and to fight the stigma that too often surrounds mental illness.
We are excited about the opportunities made possible through your support of the 2014 NAMIWalk and NAMI Butler County. Thank you again, from the bottom of our hearts!

NAMI Butler County - United In Advocacy By Denyce Peyton, Program Director NAMI Butler County experienced a very productive 2014! We met with volunteers (Ambassadors) in very useful bi-monthly meetings to explore meaningful opportunities for continued improvement in our organization. These meetings helped us identify priority program options within our human and financial resource capabilities, overall volunteer interest and potential value-add to our community. Additionally, interested volunteers offered valuable feedback regarding events, activities and greater marketing potential for NAMI Butler County. We initiated a Faith Outreach committee for the purpose of building relationships with diverse faith communities in Butler County to provide information, resources and support, and to expand community awareness and support for NAMI. NAMI staff significantly increased outreach engagements through presentations to Miami University and Fairfield and Lakota school district classes. Dedicated volunteers accompanied us to each of these presentations to assist by graciously sharing their stories. Our affiliate provided support for the NAMI on Campus club, organized by students and approved by Miami University, Oxford and NAMI National in 2014. And, of course, our awesome volunteers stepped up to help make 2014 the most successful WALK year in our affiliate's history, through soliciting donations, recruiting walkers, leading Walk teams and assisting in preparation up to and during Walk day. NAMI staff extends a heartfelt "Thank You" to all our dedicated volunteers for your continued presence and support! Immediate plans for early 2015 include our January 15, 2015 Ambassador meeting to introduce our Faith Outreach initiative to volunteers interested in helping with this effort. The meeting will begin at 6:00 pm. We will devote our March Ambassador meeting to implementing effective strategies for marketing NAMI Butler County programs and activities. We will forward more information about both meetings. Clearly, it does take a village, planning, working and being of one mind, fueled by our mission statement to accomplish what we do as NAMI Butler County! We encourage your continued participation with us into 2015. You, as NAMI volunteers represent invaluable human resources as you assist with brainstorming, planning, educating, advocating, implementing programs and fundraising, (to name a few things). If you are new to NAMI or our volunteer activities, please join our "NAMI village" of advocates. Share our story with others and encourage their participation! Mission Statement: To improve the quality of life for families and individuals who are impacted by mental health disorders through education, support, advocacy and stigma reduction.

Book Reviews
by NAMI Volunteer, Shannon Combs
Orange is the New Black
By Piper Kerman
A college graduate from a good family Piper Kerman hardly fit the bill of a hardened criminal. She takes up with a woman who lures her into smuggling drug money. Ten years later she's tried and convicted and sentenced to 13 months in a women's prison. In this interesting and insightful book, Piper details life in the prison. From the friends she makes, to the prison job she holds down, to the hours of running she uses as a diversion on a track she never succumbs to self-pity. Anyone who reads this book will come away enlightened.
