OAK BROOK, Ill. - Aug. 4, 2009 - The month of Ramadan is coming upon the Muslim community and in an effort to do more in our communities, the Muslim Women's Alliance has organized a five-week community service event.
Muslims spend a month fasting from sunrise to sunset. Ramadan is expected to begin Aug. 21 and end Sept. 19, depending on the sighting of the moon.
Our events are the following:
- Sunday, August 9: Helping refugee families welcome Ramadan with food baskets
- Saturday, August 22: Cheer up children coping with medical challenges
- Sunday, August 29: Volunteer at a food pantry
- Sunday, September 6: Join MWA for Iftar at a Chicago masjid
- Saturday, September 12: Serve breakfast to the homeless
This program was created by MWA's community service team, lead by MWA Community Service Director Sabina Abdul Qadir.
"We are blessed with our faith, good health
and family and Ramadan is a great time to share our blessings with those
in our community. We hope you can join us during the Ramadan Rush for Rewards
campaign," said Abdul Qadir.
Community service is one of the three cornerstones of MWA.
"The Muslim Women's Alliance believes in providing opportunities for hands-on service projects to our members. The
Ramadan Rush for Rewards is an amazing way to pool our efforts together
for the good of the communities we live in. What better time to do
this than in the month of Ramadan, when we are all working on
strengthening our positive values. The Ramadan Rush for Rewards
embodies all three cornerstone of MWA: Philanthropy, Community Service & Personal Development," said Anisha Patel, executive director and founder of MWA.
