FireFire Response
On October 30, 2014 tragedy struck five LaAmistad families. An apartment fire destroyed everything that these families owned. A little over a month ago the families were left with with no apartment, no belongings and no resources. We are thrilled to report that ALL the families have long term housing within the same school district. We extend an extra grateful thanks to all of the people who donated furniture, clothes, food, and money. These families are able to rebuild their lives because of you. We are moved beyond belief by the generosity of the Atlanta community.

LaAmistad received a shout-out in an article from the Atlanta Braves. The Braves 400 Club, a non-profit that donates tickets to deserving Atlanta youth, gave the LaAmistad students an opportunity over the summer to attend a game. The article can be found in the most recent addition of the Braves Gives Blog. Click on the picture to take you there. Thank you Braves for your continued support!

StudentStudent Shout-Out
Jesus Rojas is a seventh-grade student at Atlanta Classical Academy. This is his first year in LaAmistad's Teen Center, and he is incredibly hard working. After finishing his homework, Jesus will mentor his fellow students who are struggling to understand their homework. In response to hearing about the fire, he was the first student to organize a drive to donate clothes. He has strong character and immense potential. Keep up the great work, Jesus!
VolunteerVolunteer of the Month
Kathy Ray has consistantly volunteered weekly with LaAmistad After School at Peachtree Presbetrian Church for years. She comes in early to prepare the first grade room. She greets each student individually as the come into tutoring. Her kindness towards the students helps create a warm environment for the students to take risks and ask questions about their homework. We appreciate all that you continue to do for LaAmistad!

LAALatin American Association Youth Leadership Conference

On November 8th, LaAmistad Teen Center students participated in the LAA's Latino Youth Summit. Our students, along with 1,300 other youth, learned about ways to overcome adversity and positively impact their communities. Also in attendance were over 20 different colleges and universities, who met with students to discuss the importance of education and help plan collegiate futures.

We are calling all volunteers, partners, friends, and teachers to come join LaAmistad for some yuletide cheer on Thursday, December 18th at Peachtree Presbyterian Church. Festivities will start at 4 pm. Please remember to come hungry - the LaAmistad parents will make and serve traditional Latino foods.
