Christmas Time at LaAmistad

What a Christmas time was had by our students at LaAmistad After School at Peachtree Presbyterian Church! On December 13, our elementary school students along with their families, volunteers and staff, were able to enjoy a visit from Santa himself and a handful of his elves (thanks to the Atlanta Bar Association) followed by a dinner prepared by the students' parents.

Present time at Peachtree Presbyterian Church!

The very next day, elementary, middle and high school students journeyed to Philips Arena to meet the Atlanta Hawks players and to play basketball, do arts and crafts, and play games with them. The Atlanta Hawks Dance Team was also present to teach some of our students their best moves.

Lillian Rodrguez Lpez and Julianna Rue Cagle

Join LaAmistad's Board

The Board of Directors of LaAmistad recently welcomed two new member to share their expertise, perspectives, and experiences in supporting Executive Director Cat McAfee and the execution of our mission.

Lillian Rodrguez Lpez is the new Director of Latin Affairs for the Coca-Cola Company. She previously served as President of the Hispanic Federation (HF), a non-profit membership organization of 100 Latino health and human service agencies in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Pennsylvania. Her tenure at the organization was over 16 years with seven years as its President. HF supports the Latino community through its non-profit network and has a service portfolio that included direct service programs, grant making, advocacy and public policy, and community education programs at the state and national level. The Federation flourished during her leadership and she is highly respected by national and New York communities and political leaders.

Prior to joining HF, she was employed in the health care industry at the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation (HHC), a public benefit corporation which oversees New York City's public health care system.

Prior to her departure from HF to join Coca-Cola, she was elected by Hispanic national community leaders to chair the National Hispanic Leadership Agenda, a coalition of the leading Hispanic national organizations focused on federal public policy.

She also worked with various diversity councils at major corporations having served on the Nielsen, News Corporation and Comcast councils. For Comcast, she was selected to chair the Hispanic Advisory Council following the negotiation of a Memorandum of

Understanding with Hispanic leadership organizations during the federal merger review process. Her efforts resulted in her being recognized in 2010 as one of the 25 Most Powerful Hispanic Women in the country by People en Espaol and she was also selected the 2007 Coors Hispanic Leader of the Year among many other recognitions.

Ms. Rodrguez Lpez has a B.A. in Communications with a concentration in Broadcast Journalism from Fordham University.

Julianna Rue Cagle is a Development Officer at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta where she is responsible for nationwide fundraising efforts for the Aflac Cancer Center through a unique fundraising model supported by the Aflac Field Force. Prior to her time with the Aflac Cancer Center, Julianna worked with volunteer fundraising groups throughout the Atlanta community that hosted various events to benefit Children's. Julianna graduated from Furman University in 2007 with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies, Spanish studies and a concentration in Latin American Studies. She studied abroad in Nicaragua, where she lived in the community of Chiquilistagua, and honed in on the Spanish language and Latin American culture.

Julianna has been a member of Peachtree Presbyterian Church for most of her life. She has volunteered with LaAmistad in the past, and is actively beginning a new young professionals fundraising initiative to support students and families of LaAmistad. Julianna lives in Brookhaven with her husband, Spencer Cagle.

Lillian and Julianna join Jon Naphin, Philip Alequn, Larry Bradner, Howard Clark, Alex Hodges and Jay Madden to form the current Board of Directors. The Board is always looking to expand its expertise and increase the diversity of its perspectives to better understand and meet the needs of Latino students and their families whom we serve. If you have an interest in contributing to LaAmistad in this way, please contact Chairman Jon Naphin [email protected], 404-493-1703.

Volunteer Spotlight: Andrs Celadn

Andrs Celadn is a senior at Georgia Tech pursuing a bachelor's degree in Public Policy. He comes to volunteer at Peachtree Presbyterian Church every Monday and Wednesday afternoon with the middle school boys at LaAmistad After School. "He's pretty much the best volunteer ever," some of the middle school students say about Andrs. Andrs, who is fluent in Spanish, has also been helping one of our LaAmistad families with legal matters using his translating skills.

Andrs is very involved at Georgia Tech, serving as the national chairman for the Collegians for a Constructive Tomorrow, the fundraising director at the Georgia Association of College Republicans, and he has also recently begun an internship at Georgia Department of Transportation.

Thank you, Andrs, for all that you do for the students and families at LaAmistad!

LaAmistad English for Successful Living Update

We are excited to announce that we have a new LaAmistad English for Successful Living site: Community Assistance Center in Sandy Springs, Georgia. The Community Assistance Center (www.ourcac.org) has been helping neighbors in need in the Sandy Springs and Dunwoody areas of metro Atlanta since 1987, and we are thrilled to have them on board with us. The English as a Second Language (ESL) classes will be just as successful here as those held at our other two sites (Peachtree Presbyterian Church and Holy Innocents' Episcopal Church). We are expecting 50 students this winter session. "This is great news for our English for Successful Living blueprint and the potential growth of the program as a whole," remarked LaAmistad development director Wesley Dennard. ESL director Glynis Terrell is also delighted to work with the wonderful staff at the Community Action Center.

Upcoming Events

Mark your calendars for two other upcoming events. First, we have our annual Peachtree's Got Talent show on Friday, April 26. The show starts at 6:30 PM. If you would like to perform in the show or have any questions, please contact Cat McAfee at [email protected].

We will also be hosting our 13th Annual LaAmistad Golf Tournament on Thursday, May 16, at Heritage Golf Links in Tucker, GA. The tee time will be 12:30 PM. Please contact Cat McAfee at [email protected] to sign up or for more information.
