We are excited to announce another successful year of programming at LaAmistad After School at Peachtree Presbyterian Church. LaAmistad served more than 75 students. One of them, Ramiro Juarez, was just accepted into Pace Academy for the 2013-2014 school year! We have a handful of others who are waiting to hear back from other independent schools around Atlanta.

Our students who began at private schools last fall have achieved roaring success this school year. Alondra Juarez at Pace Academy made the school's honor roll, while Jorge Cruz-Calderon at The Westminster Schools made his eighth grade soccer team this spring.

Most of our students attend Sarah Smith Elementary, Warren T. Jackson Elementary, or Sutton Middle School, and have also performed admirably well this year. The elementary school students were able to raise their overall average from a B+ to an A- from first to third quarter. Middle school students raised their grades to an impressive 88 overall average during this time period. Way to go, boys and girls!
q2partnersBlooming Partnerships

LaAmistad has formed new partnerships with the High Museum of Art and the Alliance Theatre. Twenty-five LaAmistad students attended the High Museum last month to see the Frida & Diego exhibit and to make crafts (see photo below), while another 30 will be attending the Alliance Theatre on April 14, to see the play Zorro. Thank you to both of these marvelous organizations for inviting us to their culturally enriching events.

LaAmistad is also excited to begin working with North Atlanta High School this fall. Plans are to launch our first LaAmistad Leadership Chapter that will offer monthly meetings for Latino students in grades 9-12. Participants would receive mentoring, workshops, leadership skills, inspirational speakers, college prep, life skills, job training and cultural community experiences.

We are proud to announce that LaAmistad After School at Church of the Redeemer in Sandy Springs has seen impressive growth this year thanks to vibrant programming. The program, which formerly met just once a week, has increased to twice weekly and includes students not just from one grade, but from kindergarten through fourth grade. Enrollment is up to 32 students, and the program is seeking extra volunteers on Tuesday afternoons. If you live in the area and would like to help out, please contact Jimmy Brock at [email protected].

Jatna.com Giving

LaAmistad has recently partnered with the website Jatna.com! Jatna is an online giving portal that automatically donates 1-9% of the purchases you make on sites like Amazon and Walmart.com to LaAmistad, Inc. What a great way to shop and give back at the same time. See the sites below that participate in this great collaboration:

  • Amazon
  • Walmart
  • iTunes
  • Target
  • Staples
  • OfficeMax
  • Zappos
  • Travelocity
  • Buy.com
HOW IT WORKS:
  1. Start your donating by going to Jatna.com.
  2. From there, begin typing 'LaAmistad' in the empty bar.
  3. Select LaAmistad, then choose the site you would like to shop.
  4. Make your purchase, and LaAmistad, Inc. will receive a percentage of that purchase. It's that easy!

Volunteer Spotlight: Cindy Cabral

This month, we would like to celebrate the hard work and dedication of Cindy Cabral. Cindy works with our second grade class on Wednesday afternoons at LaAmistad After School at Peachtree Presbyterian Church. She was born in Los Angeles, CA and moved to Atlanta in 2009 to attend Georgia State University, where she graduated with honors last December with a degree in History. Cindy plans on pursuing a master's degree in Social Studies Education at Georgia State later this year so that she can teach History at the high school level. Thank you, Cindy, for all that you do for our LaAmistad students!
