GzLaAmistad Receives Grant from The Goizueta Foundation Supporting Replication Strategy

Atlanta, GA, July 24, 2013:

LaAmistad, Inc. has been awarded a $206,000 grant from The Goizueta Foundation to fund the establishment of two additional after-school program sites in Greater Atlanta.

LaAmistad is an award-winning after-school tutoring program for Latino and first-generation students. The organization provides tutoring five days per week, along with reading and math enrichment, preschool education, one-on-one tutoring opportunities, summer camps, mentoring, and sports programs for students in grades 1-12.

LaAmistad also serves as a parent resource center for employment, health, counseling, legal and financial services, and scholarships and administers the largest community-based adult English as a Second Language program in Georgia.

"LaAmistad believes that every person in America should receive a quality education and have the opportunity to pursue their goals, irrespective of their language of origin or socioeconomic status," said Jon Naphin, Chairman of the Board of LaAmistad. "We are grateful to the Goizueta Foundation for their support of the LaAmistad vision through their funding of additional sites in Greater Atlanta."

"We are different than other after-school programs because of the holistic approach we take with students and their families.  We engage the entire family so that they understand the value and significance of education in achieving life success," said Cat McAfee, Executive Director of LaAmistad.

"We provide resources and education to empower families, reinforcing the confidence that their children have what it takes to succeed," said McAfee.

There are currently five LaAmistad sites operating in Georgia and one in a suburb of Dallas, Texas. The goal is to have 28 additional LaAmistad sites flourishing by June of 2018.

Thank you, Goizueta Foundation!

ASLaAmistad After School Update
VargasLitzy We are proud to announce that our students at LaAmistad After School at Peachtree Presbyterian Church rounded out last school year in fashion. The middle school students finished the semester with a final average of 89.4, while the elementary school students completed their year with a 91.3 average. Way to go, everyone!

On top of great grades, the students performed well on the standardized CRCT's, with 100% meeting or exceeding expectations in reading and 93% meeting or exceeding expectations in math. Once again, hats off to LaAmistad's hardworking students!

The program served 75 students throughout the past  school year, and nearly every student maintained an A/B average. LaAmistad After School at Church of the Redeemer served another 32 students two days each week. Thanks to all of those who supported and believed in our wonderful students, along with their continued support.

LaAmistad After School at Peachtree Presbyterian Church and LaAmistad After School at Church of the Redeemer are both ready to begin what we know will be another successful year of tutoring on Tuesday, September 3.

We would also like to welcome our newest location, LaAmistad After School at Westminster Presbyterian Church. New LaAmistad Site Director, Jennifer O'Pry, will be overseeing this location. Jennifer has an extensive background in early childhood education and is looking forward to building and shaping programming there. Tutoring at Westminster will start on Tuesday, September 10.

SummerSummer at LaAmistad

LaAmistad After School students experienced a wonderful summer, with different options for summer camp. Our students also were able to experience trips to the High Museum of Art and the Arena at Gwinnett Center for American Idol Live! As for summer camps, LaAmistad hosted its own camp for elementary students called LaAmistad's Anímate Summer Camp on the campus of The Westminster Schools. Here, Latino students from LaAmistad and elsewhere took Math, Language Arts, English and Art classes and also were able to let their hair down at Westminster's aquatics center. Available to LaAmistad middle school students were programs Breakthrough at The Lovett School, a year-round academic enrichment program, and Verano Sín Límites ("Summer Without Limits") at Pace Academy. Thank you to all who supported these valuable summertime endeavors. HMA2
