Monthly Insights
Thoughts from Pat Baillie, Director of Training & Professional Development

The 2014 Out & Equal Workplace Summit Workshop selection process is drawing to a close. We made history this year with the number of submissions for workshops. Almost 200 proposals were reviewed and rated by the Workshop Review Committee. Thanks for their tireless work.

Over the next month, we will be finalizing and notifying workshop presenters in preparation for the 2014 Workplace Summit taking place here in San Francisco, Nov 3-6.

Each year, we see an interesting trend in workshop proposals: across almost every track and workshop, the review committee has seen a lack of presenter diversity. Whether the topic is bringing the voice of bisexuals, transgender, people of color or multiple generations, we seem to have a hard time creating a truly inclusive cadre of presenters.

I know when workshop submission time comes around, everyone is rushing to get the proposal in and I know when I do that, I look around at who is close by to be part of a presentation.  I pick the people who I know who are easy to reach out to and in my sphere in the workplace. When the presenters look just like us, we do ourselves a disservice during the Summit.

For example, when we talk about marriage, the assumption is that this is much more about sexual orientation. However, for someone who identifies as transgender,  marriage laws can provide an even more complicated front. We need to increase our awareness of those issues when we open up the discussion about marriage equality. People of color may not be represented in the same level of the company from which we draw our presenters, but we can make an effort to reach out and find them to bring their perspectives to the table.

A lot of you will be receiving feedback on your workshop proposals in the next week or so. If you see the line "needs more diversity", please look around and see who is not in your daily view in the workplace. See what you can do to open the door for someone who can bring their voice and teach us what we need to learn about a larger view of inclusion!

Sincerely,

Pat Baillie

Global Perspectives: An LGBT Business Imperative

Changes in the discussion of global LGBT equality are happening almost daily. Progressive countries are adding benefits while others are adding laws that negatively impact the daily lives of LGBT employees. What can businesses do to provide a level playing field for their global workforce? Join us for this call to review the current global work and resources available. Community Business will provide insights into their work and updates on India and Asia. Selisse Berry, founder and CEO of Out & Equal, will share updates on recent meetings with businesses in India and the work on developing global resources. This town call will be from 9:00am-10:00am Pacific this month to provide a greater opportunity for global audience attendance.

Trainers' Corner

News for Out & Equal Certified Trainers

Pride is right around the corner! Get the stickers, sign up volunteers, design and decorate the float are all on the checklist this time of year! Hopefully, we have added in "Teachable
Moments" to that list? Here are a few ideas:
  • Many times, allies sign up to help with Pride events and it may be the first time they have worked closely with out LGBT co-workers.
  • We also can feature LGBT history and talking points during the month in staff meetings, D&I focused events and challenging ourselves to come out on some new level in the workplace.
  • Providing talking points can help everyone feel more comfortable at these moments. Review the LGBT Terminology handout - need link (or better yet, download and print it out for everyone) and the ally tips.
  • Talk with HR and find out the latest work on benefits, especially around marriage and domestic partners.
  • Virtually connect with other parts of the company through the ERG/BRG and even try to find a sister city on a global level to celebrate Pride this year

Whatever your plans, be sure to open the door for new ERG/BRG members both LGBT and ally! Finding just one new member can make all the difference in the workplace!
