ESCAPE brought Journey to Burleson on Independence Day
It was an '80s kind of night in Burleson, Texas! ESCAPE, a crowd favorite from the 2015 Hot Sounds of Summer Concert Series, got the crowd on its feet, singing and dancing along to Journey songs.

The free almost 2-hour concert was part of the City's Independence Day Concert & Fireworks Show at Chisenhall Fields Sports Complex. The finale was a spectacular fireworks show set to patriotic music.

Thank you to all of the City staff and sponsors who made this night possible!  To see the rest of the pictures, go to the City of Burleson Texas Facebook page.
Tree limbs are accepted at the Recycle & Compost Center
If you have tree damage from the July 5 storms, the City of Burleson's Recycle & Compost Center is open on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. It is located behind Fire Station #2 (next to Burleson Memorial Cemetery), at 610 Memorial Plaza.
Limbs, brush, lumber and wood can not exceed 4-foot in length. You have to show proof of Burleson residency (water bill, trash bill) to use the Recycle & Compost Center. If you have any questions, please call 817-426-9835 or 817-426-9830.

Library launches homebound services for disabled residents
The Burleson Public Library is now providing homebound services to those citizens residing in the Burleson city limits who are unable to visit the library. When a library cardholder qualifies for the new outreach program, library materials will be delivered to them by mail. Materials will include return postage, and all items will have a 6-week loan period with two renewals available.

Library users can qualify for homebound services if they are generally confined to their residence either temporarily, due to illness or accident, or permanently due to disability, age, or other mobility issues. Anyone applying for homebound services will be interviewed by library staff and must have a Burleson Public Library card in good standing.

Users may call or email the library to request specific titles, or they can request that a librarian select materials based on their reading preferences. They may also request a phoned reference appointment from a librarian for reading suggestions and new titles offered. Read more about homebound services.

Help us Clear the Shelters on July 23 by taking a furry friend home
For the third year, North Texas shelters - including Burleson Animal Shelter - along with NBC 5 and Telemundo 39 are planning a huge adoption event. This year's nationwide Clear the Shelters Day is Saturday, July 23, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Burleson's hours will be the normal Saturday hours, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

More than 60 North Texas animal shelters are coming together and waiving adoption fees for that one day only. The adoption fee at the Burleson Animal Shelter will be waived on July 23, but if a pet is not spayed/neutered, the adopter will sign a contract committing to having that pet spayed/neutered within 30 days.

Last year, North Texans helped Clear the Shelters, finding more than 2,900 pets new homes. From the beginning of the promotion of Clear the Shelters, more than 3,100 animals were adopted, bringing the grand total to more than 6,000 pets placed in new homes in the North Texas area.

Please, visit a participating shelter on July 23 to find your new furry family member. See the list of all participating animal shelters online. The Burleson Animal Shelter is located at 775 S.E. John Jones Dr., Burleson, Texas 76028. To see all of the adoptable dogs and cats go to the Adoptions page on the City website. To check out videos of the dogs, go to the Burleson Animal Services page on Petango. Call 817-426-9283 or email the Burleson Animal Shelter with questions about any of our adoptable pets. Read more about the nationwide event.
Library has Read It Again kits ready for checkout

The kits can be used by parents, teachers and caregivers to teach beginning concept skills, including the alphabet, phonics, colors and numbers. Each theme-based kit contains approximately five books, one music CD with songs that reinforce concepts, two puppets or educational toys (such as a puzzle), and one teacher resource book that includes directions and additional activities. Find out more about Read It Again Kits.
Parade road closures begin at 6:30 a.m. Saturday, July 9

Johnson Avenue, between Gardens Boulevard and Renfro Street - including all side streets along the entire parade route - will be closed between 8:30 a.m. and 11 a.m.

Burleson Arts and Manga festival is Sept. 17
Make sure you reserve Saturday, Sept. 17, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., for the Burleson Arts and Manga Festival. The Burleson Public Library is hosting what staff says is "shaping up to be the biggest and best one yet!" Since a big crowd is expected, the fun has been moved from the library to the Burleson Senior Activity Center (216 S.W. Johnson Ave., next to the Burleson Post Office).

The professional guest lineup includes Kristen McGuire (pictured), award-winning artist and voice actress; local artist and Burleson High School alumni Chris "Oz" Fulton; and the "draw-matic duo" Halo Sama and Terry Parr, professional artists in the industry for over a decade. To see everyone who has committed to the festival, go to the Burleson Public Library Facebook page.

Burleson's festival will include all of the same great events that you'd find at a full-scale convention, including autograph sessions, live game demonstrations & freeplay, panel discussions with industry professionals, prize drawings, a cosplay contest and a video game room. This event is 100 percent free of charge and open to all ages! Be sure to like the Burleson Public Library Facebook page and click on the Burleson Arts & Manga Festival page on the City website for more updates.
Be tougher and smarter than those pesky mosquitoes
Are you fighting back against mosquitoes? Standing water is the ideal location for mosquito breeding. The most effective way to reduce mosquito populations is by denying them a place to breed.

David Lenartowicz, the City's environmental specialist, updated Burleson City Council this week about the changes in the mosquito surveillance program. To hear about the changes, watch the video of the June 20 Burleson City Council meeting

We can't stress enough to use the 4D's:

*DEET - Use insect repellents that contain DEET or any other EPA approved insect repellent.
*Dress - Wear long sleeves and long pants when you are outside.
*Dusk / Dawn - Dusk and dawn are the times of day you should try to stay indoors.
*Drain - Mosquitoes need stagnant water to grow. Eliminate stagnant water from your home and report other areas of stagnant water to the City.

If you have any concerns about mosquito breeding grounds in your area, you can report that online (go to Code Compliance, then Pool/Stagnant water), or contact David Lenartowicz, the City's environmental specialist, at 817-426-9842 or email him.
Have you lost or found a pet? Let the animal shelter know
If your pet has gone missing, it is extremely important that you go by the Burleson Animal Shelter, 775 SE John Jones Dr., to view the animals at least once every 72 hours. You may submit a form onlineemail the animal shelter, or call 817-426-9283 to make a report. It is very important to send an email to the shelter with a picture of the lost or found animal so the employees know exactly what to look for.

When calling to report a missing pet, please leave the following information: owner's name, owner's address, contact phone numbers, and a description of the pet. Also include any identification tag numbers the pet may be wearing. The shelter staff maintains a list of all the animals reported missing or found.

If you have found a pet, you can also submit a form online, email or call. The link for a found pet is the same link for the lost pet. If it is after hours, you can check a found pet for a microchip at the Burleson Animal Emergency Hospital on Alsbury Boulevard, near Albertsons. Please do not give away or rehome a found pet.

The Burleson Animal Shelter is open 11 a.m.-6 p.m., Tuesday-Friday and 11 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturdays.
