Ray Wylie Hubbard is closing out Hot Sounds of Summer series
|
|
| |
Showtime is 7:30 p.m. in Old Town Burleson
Ray Wylie Hubbard, the Oklahoma folkie of the '60s, progressive country musician of the '70s, honky-tonker in the '80s, and now a blues man, is coming to Burleson tonight, June 24. The "grizzled troubadour" is closing out the City of Burleson's 2016 Hot Sounds of Summer concert series at 7:30 p.m. in Old Town Burleson. His songs include "Mother Blues," "Snake Farm," "South of the River," "Growl," "Screw You/We're from Texas," "Dust of the Chase," "Stone Blind Horses," and "Live and Die Rock & Roll." Hubbard is also famous for writing "Up Against the Wall, Redneck Mother," which Jerry Jeff Walker recorded and turned in to a defining anthem of the 1970s. "The Ruffian's Misfortune," Hubbard's 16th album, was released in 2015.
The free 90-minute outdoor concert starts at 7:30 p.m. The City's stage will be set up on Ellison Street (124 W. Ellison St.) at the entrance to Burleson City Hall. Come down early and eat at one of the more than half a dozen Old Town restaurants, then set up your lawn chairs and blankets in the street. Food and drink are allowed at the concerts, but patrons are strongly discouraged from bringing glass bottles, due to safety reasons. The 2016 lineup includes:
- June 24 - Ray Wylie Hubbard, country/honky tonk/the blues (pictured)
- July 4 - Escape, Journey Tribute Band (Chisenhall Fields Sports Complex)
Make sure you give a big shout out to our Hot Sounds of Summer 2016 concert sponsors! They are Fresco's Mexicana, 92.1 HANK FM radio, H-E-B, Lumin+Care Family Care-Urgent Care, NuLifeClinic at Lumin+Care, P and R Print LLC, 95.9 the RANCH radio, and City Market. Thanks in part to their commitment, the City of Burleson is able to bring you five free 90-minute concerts in Old Town Burleson and a free 90-minute Independence Day Concert and Fireworks Show at Chisenhall Fields Sports Complex.

Fifth graders got a taste of firefighting via Junior Fire Academy
|
|
Give these 13 fifth graders a hand! They are the members of the Burleson Fire Department's Junior Fire Academy. They graduated June 23.
Firefighter Jon Paul Wheat led the class with the assistance of Firefighter Donny Hallmark. The 13 were teamed up on four engine companies. They include Ashlynn Ybarra, Paul Curtis, Alycia Collins, Kenneth Sanders, Coby Martinez, Trevor Harrington, Lauriana King, Logan Willenborg, Christian Harkins, Coen Huffman, Romel Ruiz, Ryder Huskins, and Liam Andrews.
The academy was four hours a day for four days. Participants received their own bunker gear, toured the fire stations, and learned about disaster safety, extrication, fire safety, fire hydrants, fire hoses and ladders. They also worked with their engine company for search and rescue training involving a maze (simulated dark conditions), and for the hose races. Congratulations graduates! To see pictures from the academy go to June 21, June 22 and June 23 albums on the City of Burleson Facebook page.

As of June 27, library switches to automatic renewal on checkouts
|
|
The Burleson Public Library is unveiling a new feature that makes manually renewing books, CDs and DVDs mostly a thing of the past. As of June 27, 2016, any non-digital item checked out at the Burleson, or MetrOPAC member libraries, will be renewed automatically at the end of its lending period.
There are a few exceptions. Items won't be renewed if there are pending requests for the item; the item has reached its maximum number of renewals (two for BPL items); the patron's account has accrued $5 or more in fines; or the item is an online-only item, like an eBook, or an interlibrary loan.
The Burleson Public Library, along with Fort Worth, Benbrook, Haltom City, Keller, North Richland Hills, and Watauga libraries, comprise the MetrOPAC library consortium. Your library card from one MetrOPAC library will be honored at all the other MetrOPAC libraries. Read more about automatic renewals.

You can make a difference by reporting suspicious activity
|
|
You can fill out a report on the iWATCH website, call in an anonymous report, or download the iWATCH DPS mobile app. The app is currently available for iPhone users on the Apple App Store and for Android users on Google Play.
DPS urges residents who see something unusual to simply speak up. Preparations for terrorist attacks may often be seen, but rarely reported. The iWATCH website is part of the DPS Intelligence and Counterterrorism Division (ICT), which serves as the central clearinghouse for the collection, management, analysis and dissemination of law enforcement and homeland security intelligence in Texas.
You've heard the saying, "if you see something, say something." Please say something.

Be tougher and smarter than those pesky mosquitoes
|
|
Are you fighting back against mosquitoes? Standing water is the ideal location for mosquito breeding. The most effective way to reduce mosquito populations is by denying them a place to breed.
We can't stress enough to use the 4D's:
*DEET - Use insect repellents that contain DEET or any other EPA approved insect repellent.
*Dress - Wear long sleeves and long pants when you are outside.
*Dusk / Dawn - Dusk and dawn are the times of day you should try to stay indoors.
*Drain - Mosquitoes need stagnant water to grow. Eliminate stagnant water from your home and report other areas of stagnant water to the City.
If you have any concerns about mosquito breeding grounds in your area, you can report that online (go to Code Compliance, then Pool/Stagnant water), or contact David Lenartowicz, the City's environmental specialist, at 817-426-9842 or email him.

Have you lost or found a pet? Let the animal shelter know
|
|
| |
If your pet has gone missing, it is extremely important that you go by the Burleson Animal Shelter, 775 SE John Jones Dr., to view the animals at least once every 72 hours. You may submit a form online, email the animal shelter, or call 817-426-9283 to make a report. It is very important to send an email to the shelter with a picture of the lost or found animal so the employees know exactly what to look for.
When calling to report a missing pet, please leave the following information: owner's name, owner's address, contact phone numbers, and a description of the pet. Also include any identification tag numbers the pet may be wearing. The shelter staff maintains a list of all the animals reported missing or found. If you have found a pet, you can also submit a form online, email or call. The link for a found pet is the same link for the lost pet. If it is after hours, you can check a found pet for a microchip at the Burleson Animal Emergency Hospital on Alsbury Boulevard, near Albertsons. Please do not give away or rehome a found pet.
