Free CERT training teaches you what to do if disaster strikes
|
|
If disaster strikes Burleson, do you know what to do? Do you know how to help your own family and your neighbor's family?
Find out how you can be part of a disaster response team. The Burleson Fire Marshal's office is hosting a free 5-day CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) training - Aug. 30, Sept. 1, Sept. 6, Sept. 8 and Sept. 10.
Students will learn how to manage utilities and put out small fires; open airways, control bleeding, and treat for shock; provide basic medical aid; search for and rescue victims safely; organize as a team; and collect disaster intelligence to support first responder efforts.
CERT members are critical in giving support to family, friends, and neighbors in their immediate area until first responders arrive. You do not have to join the team to go through training. The free classes are open to citizens of Burleson, or employees of a Burleson business, who are at least 18 years old.
To apply, fill out the CERT application on the City website, and then take it by Fire Station #1, Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. The City will do a background check of all CERT applicants. Read more about the CERT disaster response team.

Deter thieves who are looking for a car to steal
|
|

VIN etching is the permanent engraving of a vehicle's identification number (VIN) on the windshield and windows. VIN etching serves as protection against auto theft and some insurance companies will offer discounts on your auto policy.
The event is slated for Tuesday, June 21, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., at Home Depot, 300 N.W. John Jones Dr. The Burleson Police Department has one officer assigned to the Tri-County Auto Theft Task Force. If you have any questions about this event or VIN etching in general, please call 817-728-3910.

Remember, you can only water your landscape twice a week
|
|
Are you turning on your water sprinklers? Make sure you are in compliance. City of Burleson water customers have been under twice-a-week, year-round, water restrictions since April 2014.
- If your residential address ends in an even number (0, 2, 4, 6, 8) you can use an irrigation system to water your landscape on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
- If your residential address ends in an odd number (1, 3, 5, 7, 9) you can use an irrigation system to water on Thursdays and Sundays.
- All non-residential water locations (apartment complexes, businesses, industries, parks, medians, etc.) may water on Tuesdays and Fridays.
- Monday is a no-water day.
Since 2009, Burleson has banned watering with irrigation or sprinkler systems, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., year round. This includes residential and non-residential customers. That restriction is in place because up to 30 percent of the water sprayed on lawns during the heat of the day can be lost to evaporation.

Be tougher and smarter than those pesky mosquitoes
|
|
Are you fighting back against mosquitoes? Standing water is the ideal location for mosquito breeding. The most effective way to reduce mosquito populations is by denying them a place to breed.
Protect yourself! Last year, more than 70 percent of West Nile Virus victims did not use repellent. Defend yourself by using the 4Ds.
*DEET - Use insect repellents that contain DEET or any other EPA approved insect repellent.
*Dress - Wear long sleeves and long pants when you are outside.
*Dusk / Dawn - Dusk and dawn are the times of day you should try to stay indoors.
*Drain - Mosquitoes need stagnant water to grow. Eliminate stagnant water from your home and report other areas of stagnant water to the City.
If you have any concerns about mosquito breeding grounds in your area, you can report that online (go to Code Compliance, then Pool/Stagnant water), or contact David Lenartowicz, the City's environmental specialist, at 817-426-9842 or email him.

Have you lost or found a pet? Let the animal shelter know
|
|
| |
If your pet has gone missing, it is extremely important that you go by the Burleson Animal Shelter, 775 SE John Jones Dr., to view the animals at least once every 72 hours. You may submit a form online, email the animal shelter, or call 817-426-9283 to make a report. It is very important to send an email to the shelter with a picture of the lost or found animal so the employees know exactly what to look for.
When calling to report a missing pet, please leave the following information: owner's name, owner's address, contact phone numbers, and a description of the pet. Also include any identification tag numbers the pet may be wearing. The shelter staff maintains a list of all the animals reported missing or found. If you have found a pet, you can also submit a form online, email or call. The link for a found pet is the same link for the lost pet. If it is after hours, you can check a found pet for a microchip at the Burleson Animal Emergency Hospital on Alsbury Boulevard, near Albertsons. Please do not give away or rehome a found pet.
