Early literacy is the goal of Family Place Parent/Child workshops
The Burleson Public Library launched the first of its Family Place Parent/Child workshops on May 3. The class is full, but you can sign up now for the September workshop.

Parent-Child Play and Learn is a 5-week workshop that provides an environment rich with toys, books, and art activities and an opportunity for families to spend time together, make friends, and talk one-on-one with resource professionals concerning various aspects of child development, parenting, and early literacy. Each workshop has different experts and different themes.

The Family Place Library supports the essential role of parents as first teachers and addresses the physical, social, emotional and cognitive aspects of child development to help build a foundation for learning during the critical first years of life. The core components of a Family Place Library are collections of books, toys, music and multimedia materials for babies, toddlers, parents and service providers; a specially designed, welcoming space within the children's area for families with young children; the Parent/Child Workshop; developmentally appropriate programming for very young children and their parents; and, Library staff trained in family support, child development, parent education and best practices. There's more to Pancake Day than eating. Youngsters can meet historical figures Rufus and Georgia Burleson, Henry and Mollie Renfro, Annette Renfro, G.M. and Ruth Ann Dodge, share croppers, farm hands, the schoolmarm, Martha Russell, and more. Don't forget your camera . . . there are some great picture opportunities at the farm.

Paws Your Fines was a win-win for the library and animal shelter
Remember the Paws Your Fines program that the Burleson Public Library hosted in April? Library fines totaling $159 were forgiven and the Burleson Animal Shelter was the recipient of a lot of dog food and treats.

Between April 4 and April 16, library patrons who owed fines could get as much as $50 forgiven if they brought in donations (food, leashes, old towels, blankets, toys) for the Burleson Animal Shelter.

The animal shelter partners with Meals-On-Wheels for the Ani-Meals program. That program helps home bound elderly clients who share their own meals with their pets because they can't afford to buy pet food. The shelter coordinates and stores the food donated to Ani-Meals. The shelter also gives supplies to pet rescues that work with them to get pets adopted. And, the Burleson Animal Shelter staff helps those who are struggling to make ends meet but don't want to give up their four-legged family members. Thank you to everyone who was a part of Paws Your Fines!
Drug Take-Back Event brought in 725 pounds of medication
The Burleson Police Department filled 36 boxes with approximately 725 pounds of unused, expired and unwanted medication at the Prescription Drug Take-Back event April 30.

The officers and representatives from Citizens On Patrol and the REACH Council accepted unused, expired, and unwanted medications, in both pill and liquid form, for safe disposal. This collection included over-the-counter as well as prescription drugs. The Prescription Drug Take-Back Event is a partnership between the Burleson Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). The police and DEA host two Prescription Drug Take-Back events each year.

Proper disposal of medicines protects you by preventing the poisoning of children and pets; deterring misuse by teenagers and adults; avoiding health problems from accidentally taking the wrong medicine, too much of the same medicine, or a medicine that is too old to work well; and, keeping medicines from entering streams and rivers when poured down the drain or flushed down the toilet.

Burleson joined the Drug Take Back Event effort in 2012. Since that time, Burleson's events have collected more than 1 ton of prescription drugs. To see the rest of the pictures go to the City of Burleson Facebook.

Splash Day kicks off the summer season. Come on out to 550 N.W. Summercrest Blvd. If you have any questions please call the BRiCk at 817-426-9104.
200+ volunteers picked up 1,900 pounds of litter at Trash Bash
Approximately 1,900 pounds of litter were collected by 212 volunteers at the April 30 Burleson Trash Bash.

The April 29 storms did not deter volunteers from tackling the litter and debris. The free pizza and prizes at Warren Park are always a bonus, but this time the event included music from the Bransom Elementary School choir and a visit from a unique sculptor, Peter Weiler. Stop by the Burleson Public Library's garden to see his latest sculpture.

The City's neighborhood services department and Keep Burleson Beautiful host Trash Bash twice a year - April and September. Thank you to everyone who beautified Burleson! To see the rest of the pictures, go to the City of Burleson Facebook.

Keep your eyes on the skies & your ears tuned to weather updates
It is severe weather season! Burleson is extremely fortunate to have four major TV news stations in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. If you haven't already, go to the app store on your mobile device and download the TV station's weather apps. If you're not signed up for the City of Burleson's Everbridge emergency alert system, you can do that online. If you are signed up for Everbridge, the City will alert you to severe thunderstorm warnings (70 mph winds or higher and/or quarter-size hail) based on the geographic location you list on your Everbridge profile. Tornado warnings will be issued for all Everbridge subscribers, regardless of where you live in the city.

The City has an outdoor warning siren system. The sirens are used to alert those who are outdoors - walking, golfing, playing sports, doing yardwork, etc. They are not designed for you to hear them if you are indoors. The sites of Burleson's outdoor warning sirens are online.

If you are home or have a TV at work, be sure to tune in to your favorite news station for updates. If you are on the road, turn that dial to the news radio stations. You can also track the National Weather Service's Fort Worth Office and your local news stations on Facebook and Twitter.

And finally, if you have family, neighbors, friends or co-workers who do not use mobile technology, please check on them today and make sure they are aware of the potential for severe weather. Let's all watch out for each other!
Have you lost or found a pet? Let the animal shelter know
If your pet has gone missing, it is extremely important that you go by the Burleson Animal Shelter, 775 SE John Jones Dr., to view the animals at least once every 72 hours. You may submit a form onlineemail the animal shelter, or call 817-426-9283 to make a report. It is very important to send an email to the shelter with a picture of the lost or found animal so the employees know exactly what to look for.

When calling to report a missing pet, please leave the following information: owner's name, owner's address, contact phone numbers, and a description of the pet. Also include any identification tag numbers the pet may be wearing. The shelter staff maintains a list of all the animals reported missing or found.

If you have found a pet, you can also submit a form online, email or call. The link for a found pet is the same link for the lost pet. If it is after hours, you can check a found pet for a microchip at the Burleson Animal Emergency Hospital on Alsbury Boulevard, near Albertsons. Please do not give away or rehome a found pet.

The Burleson Animal Shelter is open 11 a.m.-6 p.m., Tuesday-Friday and 11 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturdays.
