Help us honor our Vietnam veterans March 26
| |
The service, and the sacrifices that Vietnam veterans made, will be recognized tomorrow, March 26, at the fifth annual Vietnam Veterans Celebration. The event is slated for 1 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Plaza, 298 E. Renfro St. (Renfro at I-35W), in Burleson.
Jan. 12, 1962, marked the United States' first combat mission against the Viet Cong. In 2012, on the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War, President Obama issued a proclamation declaring March 29 as Vietnam Veterans Day. March 29, 1973, was the date that the last of the troops left Vietnam.
The March 26 speakers include Ron Fry, Green Beret Retired, and Bill Hall, United States Army E-9, Sergeant Major. Fry served for 20 years in the United States Army, E-8 Master Sergeant, and he earned a Purple Heart in Vietnam. Hall served 23 years and also earned a Purple Heart in Vietnam.
The Burleson High School ROTC will do the honors of posting the colors. The Pipe and Drum Brigade is slated to play "Amazing Grace," followed by the posting of the MIA flag by the Burleson ROTC, then recognition of the prisoners of war and a moment of silence. Aim your eyes to the sky to see the Burleson Police Department's honor guard do the honor salute and the playing of "Taps" from the balcony of the B&G Building.
Operation Remember representatives from the Burleson Public Library will be at the event to sell veteran bricks ($15 each), set up interviews for the Veterans History Project, accept biographies for the veteran kiosk, and scan pictures for the veteran kiosk. Read more about this celebration.

Owe library fines? Paws Your Fines has a solution
Donated items will help Ani-Meals program, pet rescues, and pet parents down on their luck
The Burleson Public Library is ready to waive your fines again! Customers who owe library fines can get as much as $50 forgiven April 4 - April 16 through the library's Paws Your Fines program. The catch is that instead of digging into their pockets, customers can bring in donations that the library will turn over to the Burleson Animal Shelter.
Customers can bring leashes, beds, unopened and unexpired pet food or treats, and other related items to receive a waiver of $1-$20 per item. The library has created a donation chart to guide library cardholders in clearing up their existing fines. For example, each can of pet food brought in will result in a waiver of up to $1 in library fines, while large bags (30 pounds+) of dry food are worth $25 of library fines. A maximum of $50 can be waived.
The Burleson Animal Shelter partners with Meals-On-Wheels for the Ani-Meals program. That program helps home bound elderly clients who share their own meals with their pets because they can't afford to buy pet food. The shelter coordinates and stores the food donated to Ani-Meals. The shelter also gives supplies to pet rescues that work with them to get pets adopted. And, the Burleson Animal Shelter staff helps those who are struggling to make ends meet but don't want to give up their four-legged family members. Items donated to the library's Paws Your Fines drive will help all three causes.
Everyone is welcome to bring in donations even if they do not have fines on their library account. The library's hours are Monday-Wednesday 10 a.m. - 8 p.m. and Thursday-Saturday 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. Read more about Paws Your Fines

Hunting plastic eggs in a pool is an Easter tradition here!
It was a little chilly outside March 12, but it was warm inside thanks to a big crowd at the BRiCk's Aqua Egg Hunt!
The preschoolers toddled into the play structure area to pick up plastic eggs, while the oldest two age groups hit the lap lanes with their nets in hopes of reeling in the golden egg. Everyone who participated left with a candy bag.
Aqua Egg Hunt was an awesome photo opportunity for families and a fun event all around. Thank you for coming out and celebrating with us! To see the rest of the pictures go to the Aqua Egg Hunt album on the City of Burleson Texas Government Facebook page.
