Know what to do before your power goes out
Do you know what to do when your power goes out? Only call 911 if it is a hazard (you hear a pop or explosion, see smoke, see tree limbs hitting the wires, etc.). If it is a hazard, the fire department will respond. Contact your electric provider after you contact 911. If it is a power outage due to storms, call your electric provider, not 911.
If you are an Oncor customer, you can report your outage via text. You have to know your ESI ID number (which is listed on your TXU Energy bill) or your phone number needs to be registered with your account to set up the text option. Text 'reg' to 66267 (ONCOR) to register; text 'out' to report your outage; or text 'stat' to to receive an update on your outage. If you prefer to call, the power outage notification number for Oncor is 1-888-313-4747. You can also check out the outages in your area by going to the Oncor outage map.
If you are a United Cooperative Services customer, to report an outage, call your local office (Burleson, 817-447-9292) or use the Text Outage feature. To expedite restoration efforts, have your account number handy. Text the word UNITED to 85700 and follow the prompts. Text OUT to report an outage at your location and text STATUS to receive an update on your outage status. Members must have five accounts or less to enroll, and all five accounts can be registered. Your cell phone number must be on file with UCS prior to registering for outage text messaging. UCS also has an Outage Dashboard to check for outages in your area.

How do you know if a tornado warning is issued?
How will you know if a tornado warning or severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for Burleson? The City of Burleson, in partnership with Everbridge, will contact you. But you have to be in our system. If you are not sure if you are in the system, please contact us at 817-426-9176.
To sign up, go to the City of Burleson Alert System page, on the City website. Choose how you want to be contacted, the number of phones and email addresses you want included, and the order in which you want to be contacted. You can include your home and work address, your child's school and/or daycare, or your parents/grandparents' home. You can set a "quiet time" for messages (tornado messages will be sent regardless of quiet times) and choose which weather warnings you want to receive.
Check the Notifications on your cell phone and make sure that Emergency Alerts under Government Alerts (bottom of the list) are turned on. The National Weather Service will send weather alerts to you based on your location. If you are out of town or driving and don't have TV/Radio/social media readily accessible, you will still be warned about a tornado or severe weather so that you have time to seek shelter. And please, if you have older relatives, neighbors, co-workers or friends who are not plugged in to social media or weather alerts, please reach out to them when you are notified of the potential for severe weather.

Police set up exchange zone at 1161 SW Wilshire Blvd.
Do you use classified advertising websites such as Craigslist or buy, sell or trade merchandise via social media sites? If so, listen up.
The Burleson Police Department just designated the parking lot at the new police department as an exchange zone. Residents are encouraged to use 1161 S.W. Wilshire Blvd. (Elk at Wilshire) to exchange merchandise that you intend to sell or purchase.
Why did the police take this step? The exchange zone creates a safer way to meet a stranger instead of them coming to your home or meeting at an unsecured location. Using the zone can cut down on your chances of being robbed.
Parents/guardians can also meet at 1161 S.W. Wilshire Blvd. to exchange their children during custody or visitation times. For years, parents were permitted to use the parking lot at the old police station for that purpose. Check out these safety tips

Don't get grinched with a DWI on New Year's Eve
End the year 2015 on a good note, not in a jail cell. Texas law makes it illegal for someone with a blood alcohol content - or BAC - of 0.08 percent or higher to drive a vehicle. Some people may reach this limit after only one or two drinks, depending on their body size and other factors.
Driving "buzzed" with a BAC less than 0.08 can also be a form of impaired driving and dangerous. The Texas Department of Transportation, and all law enforcement agencies, ask you to plan ahead for a sober ride. Don't wait until after you have started drinking. Designate a driver or arrange for someone you trust to pick you up. That also applies to others you know.
If you know someone who is about to drive impaired, please take their keys and find them a sober ride home.
