Joey the 'rein donkey' will strike a pose for you Dec. 19
If the meteorologists are right, Saturday is going to be an awesome day to celebrate Christmas at the Farm!

The temperatures are expected to be in the 60s, coupled with rain free skies, on Dec. 19. That sets the perfect scene for you to get your picture taken with our "rein donkey" Joey. He and his barnyard friends, led by Gary Burkins, are hosting the free Christmas at Russell Farm festivities in Burleson, Texas. The City's 30-acre historic farm at 405 W. County Road 714 is the site for fun, noon to 8 p.m.

The festivities include pictures (bring your own camera) with a donkey wearing antlers; checking out the Christmas trees decorated by community clubs and organizations; hay rides; handmade crafts for sale; and, tours of the historic Russell-Boren house as well as the Russell Farm Art Center gallery. Concessions include hot cocoa, cookies, coffee and ice cream. Come on out for this unique family Christmas experience!
Expect delays at Johnson and Renfro Dec. 21-22
If your weekday route includes the intersection of Johnson Avenue and Renfro Street, be prepared for delays starting on Monday, Dec. 21, after 8 a.m.

The City's signal technician, along with a contractor, will be installing a camera detection system at that intersection. This camera detects traffic, and when to change the signal. Various lane closures will occur Monday and Tuesday, Dec. 21-22. The workers will be using the right turn lanes to access the aerial installation of cameras. Traffic will still be able to get through the intersection, however, there may be short delays. Thank you in advance for your patience!
Kelly Mearns named the City's Employee of the Year
Adding two major projects, in addition to her regular daily duties, to her plate in 2015 earned Kelly Mearns the title of Employee of the Year.

The executive assistant for the City Manager's Office was one of four vying for the City of Burleson's top honor for 2015. The 2015 Employee of the Quarter winners are Burleson Police Department Investigator Larry Sparks; Burleson Senior Activity Center Supervisor Paula Benjamin; Alton Fore, senior crew leader for the pavement maintenance division of the public works department; and Mearns.

Mearns was part of a two-person team that took on the project of redesigning the City's website, which was revealed in July 2015. Since then the team has been putting the finishing touches on what will be the City's first mobile app. While she was working on the website redesign project, Mearns was doing double duty spearheading a new software program for creating agendas for City Council, Planning and Zoning, and City boards/committees.

Mearns will mark her 19th anniversary with the City in January 2016. She joins a list of honorees that dates back to 1976. See who those past Employee of the Year winners include!

The BRiCk will be closed on Dec. 24, Dec. 25 and Jan. 1. It will be open Dec. 31, but the hours are shortened to 5 a.m.-5 p.m. The library and the animal shelter will be closed Dec. 24-26 for Christmas (as well as New Year's Day). The Senior Activity Center will be open Saturday, Dec. 26.
The game ended in a tie, and the kids were the winners!
What a game! The Heart for the Kids flag football game between the Burleson Professional Fire Fighters Association Local #4025 and Burleson Police Officers Association ended in a 21-21 tie on Dec. 12.

This was the first time the two had played flag football since 2009. During the interim years they played softball and kickball.

The clash of the "Blue" and the "Red" created a good-natured camaraderie on the field at Burleson Stadium. This is the 14th year that the two associations have hosted the benefit.

What was the best part? The game drew in bicycles, stuffed animals, and bags upon bags upon bags of toys - two full truck loads and one expedition full - for families in need.

Thank you to the Burleson Independent School District for hosting the game; thank you to everyone who donated to Heart for the Kids; and a big thank you to our public safety staff who gave it their all so that the children could have a brighter Christmas.

Go to the Heart for the Kids Benefit game album on the City of Burleson Facebook page for the rest of the pictures!

Christmas Craft Fair was packed with shoppers
It was a Christmas Craft Fair shopping mecca Dec. 12 at the Burleson Senior Activity Center!

There was everything from hand-sewn crafts, to blankets, pens, wine bottle stoppers, art, and more. The City's senior center hosts a craft fair twice a year, July and December.

Thank you to all of the vendors who came out to make this such a successful event! Go to the Christmas Craft Fair album on the City of Burleson Facebook page for the rest of the pictures!

Get your family pet a microchip for Christmas
What's the best gift you can give your four-legged family member this Christmas? A microchip.

Every pet that comes through the Burleson Animal Shelter has a microchip before he/she leaves. Microchips and identification (collar, ID tag, rabies tag) are critical in finding your pet if it runs away over the holidays. The Burleson Animal Shelter offers microchips for $15, regardless of where you live. You must provide proof of rabies vaccination to get the microchip.

The Burleson Animal Shelter is open Tuesday-Friday, 11 a.m.-6 p.m. and Saturday, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. You have until Wednesday, Dec. 23, at 6 p.m. to get your pet microchipped before Christmas. The animal shelter is located at 775 S.E. John Jones Dr. No appointment is needed to get the microchip. For more information please call 817-426-9283 or email the shelter.
