October 30, 2015
Forecast says . . . Boo Bash is a go Oct. 31 in Old Town!
Old Town Burleson will be taken over by cute babies dressed up as cuddly critters, action heroes, swashbucklers, Disney characters, and definitely a few Minions and Star Wars characters on Saturday, Oct. 31, for the City's annual Boo Bash.

It's two hours of free trick or treating sponsored by the City of Burleson's parks and recreation department and the community. The fun is 6 p.m.-8 p.m. on Ellison Street, between Main Street (Babe's/Fresco's corner) and Johnson Avenue.

Children, birth to 12 years old, will arrive in their favorite Halloween costumes - trick-or-treat bags in hand - for the ultimate in trick or treating. Local businesses, churches, and civic groups set up booths and decorate their vehicles for trunk-or-treat fun. Children will enjoy free candy, games, bounce houses, a pumpkin patch full of free pumpkins to decorate, and a costume parade. For more information, call 817-426-9112. Read More

Ellison closes, 2 p.m.-9 p.m., for Boo Bash on Oct. 31
Ellison Street will be closed to traffic between 2 p.m. and 9 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 31, for the Burleson Old Town Boo Bash. The Boo Bash event is 6 p.m.-8 p.m.

The Ellison Street closure is from Main Street to Johnson Avenue, and at all cross streets in that four block area. The first row of parking in the City parking lot at the corner of Warren and Renfro streets will be reserved for those vehicles displaying handicapped stickers or license plates.

The Boo Bash vendor booths will separate the east and west bound lines of families who are trick or treating. The vendors will be set up in the middle of Ellison Street, then barricades will be placed to help separate those who are in the trick or treat lines from those who are walking around the event.

People walking east will enter at the Bransom/Ellison intersection and people walking west will enter at the Wilson/Ellison intersection (Burleson City Hall is between Warren and Wilson streets). Organizers have moved certain attractions to help keep the lines flowing better. With barricades in place, participants will have to enter at one of the entrances instead of cutting in to the middle of the line.
Military veterans, share your stories with us
Our military veterans have stories that they may have never told about their service to this country. Now they can, through three veteran programs coordinated by the Burleson Public Library. You can honor a military veteran through Operation Remember, Bricks for Veterans, and the Burleson Veterans History Project.

Operation Remember archives the personal histories (pictures and biographies) of Burleson's military veterans.

Bricks for Veterans is a project started in 2007 at Veterans Memorial Plaza, 298 E. Renfro St. Veteran bricks are $15 each and include the veteran's name, branch of service, and any conflict(s) in which he or she may have been involved.

The Burleson Veterans History Project is linked to the Library of Congress' Veterans History Project. Library staff provides veterans with field kits that give them an overview of the process. The kit also includes a registration form and a copy of the questions that will be asked during the interview. Library staff then schedules the veteran's interview with the Burleson Heritage Foundation, which was instrumental in kicking off the history project in 2003. Read More

Donate food/hygiene products and library fines are forgiven
The Food for Fines program ends Nov. 6! Burleson Public Library patrons who owe library fines can get as much as $30 forgiven between now and Nov. 6 via the library's Food for Fines program. Instead of digging into their pockets to pay the fines, patrons can search their pantry for food or buy some extra hygiene products, then drop those donations off at the library. The library will donate the Food for Fines program items to Harvest House.

Patrons are asked to bring new, unopened personal hygiene products and nonperishable food items to the library to receive credit of $1 per item and $2 per high need item. A maximum of $30 can be waived. High need items, as designated by Harvest House, are packages of toilet paper, toothpaste and toothbrushes, bar soap, shampoo and conditioner, razors, feminine hygiene products, deodorant, and laundry soap. Fall back an hour at 2 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 1
Fall back! - - - The end of daylight saving time means it's time to change the batteries in your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. The clocks fall back one hour at 2 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 1. Changing the batteries while changing the time on your clocks serves as a great reminder. Smoke alarms should be tested once a month and if an alarm "chirps," warning the battery is low, replace the battery right away. Microchip your pet before Halloween
What are you going to do before Oct. 31? Microchip your pet. Every pet that comes through the Burleson Animal Shelter has a microchip before he/she leaves. Microchips and identification (collar, ID tag, rabies tag) are critical in finding your pet if it gets lost or taken over the Halloween weekend. The Burleson Animal Shelter offers microchips for $15, regardless of where you live. You must provide proof of rabies vaccination to get the microchip. The animal shelter hours are 11 a.m.-6 p.m., Tuesday-Friday and 11 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturdays. It is located at 775 S.E. John Jones Dr. in Burleson! Read More
Ani-Meals is great way to help the homebound and their pets
If you want to make a difference in the life of an elderly or homebound resident and their pets, become a part of the Ani-Meals pet food program. Ani-Meals is a partnership between Meals-on-Wheels of Johnson and Ellis counties and area animal shelters that began in 2009. Ani-Meals was started because Meals-on-Wheels staff and volunteers found that the homebound elderly clients were sharing their own meals with their pets because they could not afford to buy pet food. The Burleson Animal Shelter helps coordinate the program and stores the donated pet food. On the first Saturday of each month, Meals-on-Wheels volunteers meet at the Burleson Animal Shelter on John Jones Drive to pick up and deliver the donated pet food to 10 to 20 Meals-on-Wheels recipients in Burleson. If you want to donate pet food, toys, or treats, call the animal shelter at 817-426-9283 for more information.
