Have your neighbor's back at National Night Out Oct. 10
The power of a neighborhood that comes together to watch out for each other is immeasurable. That's the message behind the annual National Night Out event.

There will be picnics, cookouts, and more in neighborhoods citywide, on Saturday, Oct. 10, 6 p.m.-9 p.m., as Burleson celebrates National Night Out. Please share your military veteran pictures and stories
The Burleson Public Library wants photos of your veterans for Operation Remember.
Operation Remember is a project of the City of Burleson that works to archive the personal histories of Burleson's veterans and present their stories in a way that encourages every generation to learn more about our veterans' contributions to our country and our community.  A newly redesigned interactive kiosk at Veterans Memorial Plaza helps visitors find military veteran bricks and also includes additional information about each veteran, such as photos, biographies and even excerpts from veteran interviews. But many of the bricks don't have any personal information listed in the on-site kiosk. The Burleson Public Library is asking families to submit photos and biographies of their veterans so they can be included. Read More
Reserve Oct. 24 for the Burleson Old Town Boo Bash
Old Town will be taken over by superheroes, princesses, and more on Saturday, Oct. 24, 6 p.m.-8 p.m., for the City's eighth annual free Burleson Old Town Boo Bash. The fun takes place on Ellison Street, between Main Street and Johnson Avenue (124 W. Ellison St.). Children, birth-12 years old, will arrive in their favorite Halloween costumes - trick-or-treat bags in hand - for the ultimate in trick or treating. Local businesses, churches, and civic groups set up booths and decorate their vehicles for trunk-or-treat fun. Children will enjoy free candy, games, bounce houses, a pumpkin patch full of free pumpkins to decorate, and a costume parade. Booth spaces are free, but you have to fill out a booth application, which is available on the City website. For more information, call 817-426-9112.
Make sure your pets are vaccinated against rabies
Are your pet's rabies vaccinations up to date? If you answered no, your pets could be at risk. As of Sept. 28, there have been 23 confirmed rabid skunks in 2015 in Johnson County. Rabies is enzootic - a disease that is constantly present in an animal - in skunks in Texas.

Your best prevention is to make sure your pets are vaccinated against rabies and to keep those vaccinations up to date. Most veterinarians are now giving 3-year rabies vaccinations. Be sure to keep a copy of your rabies vaccination certificate as proof that your pet has been vaccinated. Read More
Seventy smoke detectors installed during Red Cross campaign
On Aug. 29, more than 50 people representing the Red Cross, Burleson fire marshal's office and fire department, as well as community volunteers canvassed the neighborhoods for the American Red Cross Home Fire Preparedness Campaign. The goal was to provide and install smoke detectors where needed.

In a four-hour span of time, 14 teams reached out to 412 homes, checked 20 alarms, installed 20 batteries, and installed 70 alarms. If residents weren't home, an informational door knocker was left on the front door.

"This was a group effort involving multiple agencies and it was very successful. I want to thank the American Red Cross and those who came out to help. We put up a lot more smoke detectors this year than I thought we would," Burleson Fire Marshal Stacy Singleton said. "Because of this team effort we have more citizens protected than we did before the campaign. I hope we can spread this program into other areas of town." Read More

Your adopted pet will be spayed/neutered and have rabies shot
When you adopt a cat or dog from the Burleson Animal Shelter, you don't have to arrange for rabies vaccinations or the required spay/neuter surgery. Your new four-legged family member will have that done before he/she goes home with you, and it will only cost you an additional $75 (the new adoption fee is $140). The goal is to assist in reducing the overpopulation of unwanted animals not only in the Burleson area, but in the state.

State law requires that all animals that are adopted from animal shelters be spayed or neutered. Before the new ordinance was adopted, 43 percent of those who adopted from the Burleson Animal Shelter did not comply.

So here is the new drill. Check out the adoptable pet pictures on the City of Burleson website and watch the weekly Vines videos on the Burleson Animal Shelter Facebook. When you see a pet that you really like, stop by 775 S.E. John Jones Dr. and do a meet and greet between your family (including your current pets) and the potential pet. If you all click, the adoption paperwork is filled out at the animal shelter. Under the new ordinance, the animal shelter staff transports the adopted pet to the contracted veterinarian where that adopted pet will be spayed/neutered and receive the rabies vaccination. You and your new pet are reunited at the veterinarian office, not at the animal shelter. Read More
