Clean out medicine cabinets for Sept. 26 Drug Take Back event
Have you cleaned out your medicine cabinets? The City, in partnership with the Drug Enforcement Administration, will be hosting the National Prescription Drug Take-Back event on Saturday, Sept. 26, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the City's old service center at 133 N. Main St. The Burleson Police Department and the Citizens on Patrol will be working this event. Residents may drop off unused, expired or unwanted medications, in both pill and liquid form, for safe disposal. This includes over-the-counter as well as prescription drugs. Proper disposal of medicines protects you by preventing poisoning of children and pets; deterring misuse by teenagers and adults; avoiding health problems from accidentally taking the wrong medicine, too much of the same medicine, or a medicine that is too old to work well; and, keeping medicines from entering streams and rivers when poured down the drain or flushed down the toilet. For more information about Burleson's September 26 event, call Sgt. Bob Sherman at 817-426-9951. Read More

You made Grump's Tip-A-Cop a success!
Wow . . . you really came out and supported your Burleson Police Department at Tip-A-Cop at Grumps restaurant on Sept. 21. Between the tip donations and a portion of Grumps' nightly proceeds, the Burleson Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association brought in $4,600. That's more than twice the amount, $2,200, raised in 2014, the inaugural year of the event. Burleson's men and women in blue - our police officers - worked the tables for tips and grins to raise money for the 501©(3) organization. BCPAAA members and the Police Explorers greeted guests and cleared and cleaned tables. The line to eat was out the door and around the block for the first three hours of the four-hour event. Thank you to everyone who participated! To see the rest of the pictures, go to the Tip-A-Cop album on the City of Burleson Texas Facebook page.

Your adopted pet will be spayed/neutered and have rabies shot
When you adopt a cat or dog from the Burleson Animal Shelter, you don't have to arrange for rabies vaccinations or the required spay/neuter surgery. Your new four-legged family member will have that done before he/she goes home with you, and it will only cost you an additional $75 (the new adoption fee is $140). The goal is to assist in reducing the overpopulation of unwanted animals not only in the Burleson area, but in the state.
State law requires that all animals that are adopted from animal shelters be spayed or neutered. Before the new ordinance was adopted, 43 percent of those who adopted from the Burleson Animal Shelter did not comply.
So here is the new drill. Check out the adoptable pet pictures on the City of Burleson website and watch the weekly Vines videos on the Burleson Animal Shelter Facebook. When you see a pet that you really like, stop by 775 S.E. John Jones Dr. and do a meet and greet between your family (including your current pets) and the potential pet. If you all click, the adoption paperwork is filled out at the animal shelter. Under the new ordinance, the animal shelter staff transports the adopted pet to the contracted veterinarian where that adopted pet will be spayed/neutered and receive the rabies vaccination. You and your new pet are reunited at the veterinarian office, not at the animal shelter. Read More

Your neighbors learned the skills to help during a disaster
They learned what to do, then they did it on Sept. 19 when Burleson CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) members participated in a training scenario. Skills learned included teamwork; how to create cribbing/temporary wooden pieces or structure used to support heavy objects; how to manage utilities and put out small fires; open airways, control bleeding, and treat for shock; provide basic medical aid; search for and rescue victims safely; and collect disaster intelligence to support first responder efforts. CERT members are critical in giving support to family, friends, and neighbors in their immediate area until first responders arrive. CERT teams can be used to search for lost or kidnapped children, staff emergency operations centers and monitor events, secure emergency operations centers, manage "spontaneous/convergent" volunteers, and assist other relief organizations on mass care. Big shout out to those who signed up! For the rest of the pictures, go to the CERT Training album on the City of Burleson Texas Facebook page.
