Senior Center supervisor named City's Employee of the Quarter
You don't work for a City for more than 15 years without garnering some well-deserved praise from your co-workers. Paula Benjamin received just that when four of her fellow parks and recreation employees nominated her for the City's Employee of the Quarter award for the second quarter of 2015. And she won. The 55-year-old Benjamin is best known for her creativity and mentoring. She began her career with the City at Burleson's first recreation center as the center supervisor before it became Chisenhall Fields Sports Complex, and now as the supervisor at the Burleson Senior Activity Center. Benjamin was one of 15 nominated for the second quarterly honor. The nominees represent the City's recreation, parks, golf, and library employees. The nominations are based on an employee's efficiency, transparency, honesty, innovation and customer service. Read More

After more than 17 years as Burleson's first full-time paid fire chief, Gary Wisdom is turning off the fire radio, turning off the weather radar, and turning in his keys. More than 80 dogs & cats adopted in nationwide Clear the Shelter campaign
Aug. 15 was a great day for the Burleson Animal Shelter. We even got someone to sing "I love big mutts and I cannot lie!" Burleson participated in a national campaign, along with 54 other Dallas-Fort Worth area shelters, called Clear the Shelters. Participating shelters agreed to waive all adoption fees on Aug. 15 in hopes of attracting even more people interested in giving a furry friend a forever home. The Burleson Animal Shelter adopted out 45 cats and dogs on Aug. 15, bringing the total since July 27, when the Clear the Shelters campaign began, to 82! The first dog out the door Aug. 15 was Roxxie, a 6-month-old American Pit Bull/American Blue Heeler mix love bug. She was adopted by the Meledez family. And last out the door Aug. 15 was the now famous Dudley, a Pointer mix, whose videos went viral on Facebook with more than 33,700 views of his video plea to be adopted and more than 31,700 views of the video with his adoptive family. The DFW event was hosted by NBC5 and Telemundo 39. More than 18,000 pets were adopted in the NBCUniversal Clear the Shelters national campaign which took place in 28 owned television stations. Restrictions on watering landscape are year-round
The outdoor water restrictions that were most recently enacted in Burleson in June 2013 became permanent in April 2014 due to a required change in the City's water conservation plan. If your residential address ends in an even number (0, 2, 4, 6, 8) you can use an irrigation system to water your landscape on Wednesdays and Saturdays. If your residential address ends in an odd number (1, 3, 5, 7, 9) you can use an irrigation system to water on Thursdays and Sundays. All non-residential water locations (apartment complexes, businesses, industries, parks, medians, etc.) may water on Tuesdays and Fridays. Monday is a no-water day. Since 2009, Burleson has banned watering with irrigation or sprinkler systems, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., year round. This includes residential and non-residential customers. That restriction is in place because up to 30 percent of the water sprayed on lawns during the heat of the day can be lost to evaporation.

Keep children, and drivers, safe with Rules of the Road
The Burleson Police Department has been receiving several complaints regarding children riding bicycles, skateboards, and scooters in the streets. Police ask parents to remind their children that they need to watch out for vehicles and be courteous. Many of the complaints concern "near misses" where children are not paying attention. Teach your children the "Rules of the Road" (i.e.- stay to the right side of the street, stop at stop signs, look both ways before you enter or cross the street, etc.). These simple rules could save their lives! Remember, a 40-pound child on a 20-pound bike is no match for a 3,000 pound vehicle. Make sure your kids understand that and keep them safe!
