Take a moment to remember the fallen
Do you know why the graves of veterans are decorated on Memorial Day weekend? It started back in 1868. Three years after the Civil War ended, on May 5, 1868, the head of an organization of Union veterans - the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) - established Decoration Day as a time for the nation to decorate the graves of the war dead with flowers. The first large observance was held that year at Arlington National Cemetery, across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C. The ceremonies centered around the mourning-draped veranda of the Arlington mansion, once the home of Gen. Robert E. Lee. In 1971, Memorial Day was declared a national holiday by an act of Congress, though it is still often called Decoration Day. It was then also placed on the last Monday in May, as were some other federal holidays. The National Moment of Remembrance encourages all Americans to pause wherever they are at 3 p.m. local time on Memorial Day for a minute of silence to remember and honor those who have died in service to the nation. Some sailed, some didn't, but they had a blast at the Recycled Boat Regatta
They had a blast May 16 at the City and Keep Burleson Beautiful's Recycled Boat Regatta. Students between six and 17 years old combined their knowledge from environmental sciences and aquatic sciences to build boats out of recyclable material and race the length of the BRiCk's outdoor pool. More than 25 teams participated. Some reached the finish line, and some never got off the start line, but it was all done in fun. Thank you to all who participated and congratulations to the winners! To see the rest of the pictures, go to the City of Burleson Facebook.

Be part of the solution!
You've seen it - construction and demolition debris, appliances, abandoned vehicles, automobile parts, tires, furniture, and household hazardous waste - dumped on an empty lot, in a field or an alley, in a yard, or at the end of a dead-end street. That's illegal dumping. You can clean up the problem by calling code enforcement at 817-426-9832; email [email protected]; or call the Burleson Police Department at 817-426-9903. To respond, code enforcement officers need the date, time and location of the incident; the vehicle license plate number and a detailed description of the vehicle involved; and, a detailed description of the person involved. Be part of the solution!
