Public safety hosts Heart for Kids game Dec. 13

This year's benefit game for Heart for the Kids will be a little different. Burleson Police, Burleson Fire, and the Crowley Fire Department are banding together to form two teams to hit the donations out of the park . . . all to make sure that families who need help will have toys and clothing to put under the Christmas tree. The bats will be cracking Saturday, Dec. 13, at 2 p.m. at Hidden Creek Sports Complex, 295 E. Hidden Creek Pkwy. Admission is one unwrapped toy. Heart for the Kids will distribute the donated items to families the week of Dec. 14.This is the 13th year that the Burleson Professional Fire Fighters Association Local #4025 and Burleson Police Officers Association have hosted the event. Expect lane closures week of Dec. 15

The Texas Department of Transportation will be installing a new red light camera at the Wilshire/Gardens/Summercrest intersection (southbound side) the week of Dec. 15. This work is to relocate the original camera which was removed when the median project was done and a dedicated right turn lane for south bound traffic was added. There will be short term lane closures towards the end of the week to install remote sensors. The lanes will be closed only between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. and each closure should last about 30 minutes

Hang out at Russell Farm & meet

You wanted to see Santa . . .

The big guy from the North Pole hosted more than 1,000 children and parents at the City's 15th annual Breakfast with Santa at the BRiCk Dec. 6. The pre-teens and their families enjoyed pancakes and sausage, craft making, picture taking, and of course the chance to sit on Santa Claus' knee and tell him what they wanted for Christmas. Yes, even the adults sat on Santa's knee!  For the rest of the pictures, go to the Breakfast with Santa album on the City's Facebook page.

What a Parade of Lights it was!

There were bands, floats, tractors, dogs, horses, and fire trucks in the Dec. 6, 2014 Burleson Rotary Club Christmas Parade of Lights.  The entries twinkled with lights and some entrants were even walking and singing. Both high school bands marched in the community parade. To see the rest of the pictures, go to the Christmas parade, tree lighting and fireworks album on the City of Burleson Facebook page.

We need your input on master plans

The City is hosting an Old Town Pedestrian Improvements Master Mobility Plan meeting on Thursday, Dec. 18, 6 p.m.-8 p.m., at city hall. This is a come and go meeting. The focus is on two projects - the new Master Mobility Plan which includes the Master Thoroughfare Plan Update (future roadway network) and the Bicycle Path Plan. The Old Town Mobility Improvements Project will also be discussed. The Old Town plan calls for the widening of sidewalks on Main Street - between Renfro Street and Bufford Street - landscaping and traffic flow improvements to the Main Street parking areas, and landscaping and pedestrian improvements on Ellison Street between Main and Wilson Street. If you can't attend the Dec. 18 meeting you can stop by the engineering services department at city hall and look at the plans.

You loved the Christmas fireworks!

We heard nothing but accolades from residents following the City's annual Christmas fireworks show in Old Town Burleson. Fireworks were the big finale for a day full of Christmas festivities that included Breakfast with Santa, the Christmas Craft Fair, Burleson Rotary Club Parade of Lights, and the City's lighting of the official Christmas tree. To see the rest of the pictures from the Dec. 6 festivities, go to the Christmas parade, tree lighting and fireworks album on the City of  Burleson Facebook page.

Be part of our website redesign

The City of Burleson website is undergoing a redesign in 2015. You can be part of that! Capture a few shots of your favorite scene in Burleson. The pictures must be a minimum of 2,000 pixels wide (3,000 is preferable), so pictures from camera phones will not work. Email your favorite scenery shots. Make sure to include your name, the location of the picture, and your contact information. The deadline to submit is Dec. 18. We'll let you know if we choose your favorite scene!

Five trout, two poles, 24 hours

Bailey Lake is filled with trout! Please note the rules for trout fishing . . . you are limited to two fishing poles per person. That means one person can't be fishing with five poles. Speaking of five, the limit is five trout per day (yes, per every 24 hours). If you catch one, two, three, four or five trout in 24 hours, you can keep it/them. But if you catch anything that is not a trout, you have to release it. And, as a reminder, a fishing license is required for anglers 17 years of age and older who wish to fish at Bailey Lake. Bailey Lake is located at 280 W. Hidden Creek Pkwy. in Burleson (corner of Hidden Creek and Gardens Boulevard). All state guidelines and requirements are applicable. To learn more about fishing licenses, please go to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Division page.

Say no, no no to holiday thieves

The Texas Auto Burglary and Theft Prevention Authority, of which the Burleson Police Department is a member, reminds drivers that a vehicle is burglarized every two minutes and stolen every eight minutes in the state. These crimes can escalate during the holiday season. A thief won't necessarily stop with taking your vehicle and the things inside. A thief may also look for personal documents and items that can help them steal your identity or gain access to your home. Auto burglars are more likely to scout malls, shopping centers, entertainment venues, hotels, and other business parking lots looking for opportunities to break into vehicles and take gifts, purses, wallets, packages, electronics, suitcases, garage door openers, keys and personal information. When vehicles are left unlocked and unattended, drivers are inviting thieves to walk away with everything they see inside. More

BPD assists disabled crime victims

When the Disabled Crime Victim's Assistance, Inc. (DCVA) hosts the Christmas party this year, the gifts will be wrapped in paper and tied with bows thanks to a wrapping paper drive hosted by the Burleson Police Department. Kathy James and Karen Goodman from the BPD's records division heard about the 2013 Christmas party and how much it helps the disabled crime victim and families. The collection of paper began before that 2013 party and was so successful that the duo, with the help of other members of the department, decided to make the wrapping paper drive an annual event.  The police department presented those donations to Wanda Page, a longtime victims assistance coordinator for Burleson who founded the DCVA in 1999. Wanda's daughter, Elizabeth Page, was shot multiple times in the chest and back by a client at a Mental Health Mental Retardation facility in Johnson County. That was 1988. Elizabeth was left with a spinal cord injury and paralysis from the chest down.  DCVA was launched from Wanda's home, but is now centrally located in Fort Worth, convenient to the courthouse and hospital district, and is accessible for those who may have a disability. The DCVA helps those people who became disabled as a result of a violent crime or those who were already disabled before they became a crime victim. DCVA helps adults, children and the elderly.
