Officers serve up food and reel in tips
It was hopping at Grumps Burgers in Burleson Sept. 29! Between the tips and a portion of the proceeds from the $8 Tip A Cop meal, the Burleson Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association took in a little over $2,200. More than half a dozen Burleson Police officers, and the chief, served up humor along with the orders. BCPAAA members and students in the Burleson Police Explorers program welcomed patrons, cleared tables, and filled drinks. In the past, BCPAAA members have raised funds and provided the Burleson Police Department with pursuit spikes, all the initial uniforms for the Honor Guard (valued at approximately $3,300), purchased four-six new bikes for the department's bicycle unit (and established a maintenance fund for the bikes), and helped raise funds for equipment for the Citizens On Patrol members. Thank you Grumps Burgers for hosting the fundraiser! To see the rest of the pictures, go to the Tip A Cop photo album on the City of Burleson Facebook.

Working smoke alarms save lives!
Have you tested your smoke alarms lately? "Working Smoke Alarms Save Lives: Test Yours Every Month!" is the theme for Fire Prevention Week, Oct. 5-11. The Burleson Fire Marshal's Office will be working with the Burleson Fire Department to visit schools and daycares to drive the message home. Why? Because according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), having a working smoke alarm in a home cuts the risk of dying in a fire in half. Install smoke alarms inside every bedroom, outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home, including the basement. Test all smoke alarms every month by using the test button. And, replace all smoke alarms every 10 years or sooner if they don't respond properly when tested. More

More than 400 pounds of medication collected at Drug Take Back event
Final count? Eighteen boxes containing 413 pounds of unused, expired or unwanted medication were collected at the Burleson Drug Take Back Event. The Burleson Police Department and Citizens On Patrol joined forces with the DEA to accept drugs, in both pill and liquid form, for safe disposal during the four-hour event Sept. 27. This included over-the-counter as well as prescription drugs. At the April 2014 event, the police department collected 293 pounds of unused, expired or unwanted medications. At the October 2013 event, 247 pounds were collected. The Drug Take Back events provide a way for patients, caregivers, and pet owners to dispose of controlled substance medications such as painkillers, sedatives, and stimulants like ADHD drugs instead of flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash. To see the rest of the pictures, go to the Drug Take Back Event photo album on the City of Burleson Facebook.

Starve those mosquitoes!
Mosquitoes love to feed on your family, friends and pets. But there is a way to starve them. Drain. Drain is the fourth D of the 4-Ds (DEET, dress, dawn/dusk, and drain), in combatting mosquitoes. Check for standing water around your home and business. The most common breeding grounds are buckets and garbage cans, ornamental ponds, wading pools, tree holes, gutters, tarps, toys, flower pots and saucers, water dishes for your pet, wheel barrows, rain barrels, bird baths, boats and tires. Mosquito season in Burleson typically runs through October, with peak activity in August. Be on heightened alert. Use insect repellents that contain DEET or any other EPA approved insect repellent. Wear long sleeves and long pants when you are outside. And, dusk and dawn are the times of day you should try to stay indoors. The mosquito that causes the most problem in this area has a short flight range, so if you are having a mosquito problem, look in your immediate area. The breeding ground may be closer than you think. Read More
