Flashing yellow arrow signal means

yield first, then you can turn left

Have you seen the flashing yellow arrow signal lights on Hwy. 174? The new signals were active at Hwy. 174/Summercrest, Hwy. 174/Newton and Hwy. 174/Ellison and Tarrant intersections on Sept. 10. Weather permitting, the yellow arrow signal lights were going to be active at the Hwy. 174/Renfro and Hwy. 174/Hillery intersections by today, Sept. 12. The Texas Department of Transportation installed the new signals to improve traffic flow and left-turn safety on the state highway. If the yellow arrow signal is flashing, drivers may turn left after yielding to oncoming traffic and pedestrians in the crosswalk. The green arrow means that vehicles turning left have the right-of-way. The red arrow means to stop and wait (do not enter the intersection to turn) and the yellow arrow means prepare to stop. See the detailed diagram for more clarification.

Police seek third suspect in June BMVs

Two have been arrested and Burleson Police want to see the third suspect behind bars. On July 3, the Burleson Police Department posted a video  to the Johnson County Crime Stoppers YouTube channel seeking help identifying three suspects who allegedly burglarized vehicles in a neighborhood in north Burleson. The burglaries took place June 30. Stolen credit cards were used at local stores. Thanks to tips from those viewers, the Fort Worth Police Department arrested Matthew Chick, 21, of Mansfield on July 25. Fort Worth Police made a second arrest on Sept. 8 of 17-year-old Madison Mitchell, also of Mansfield. Both were charged with engaging in organized criminal activity/credit card abuse. The third suspect is identified as Angelica Velasquez, 22. She is wanted for the same charge. Anyone with information as to the location of Velasquez can call Burleson Detective N. Grace, at 817-426-9896. To remain anonymous, call Johnson County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-794-8477 or 817-469-8477. Tips can also be submitted online or you can text 274637 and type JCCS, then your message.

The event is 10 a.m.-2 p.m. and coincides with National Preparedness Month. This is hosted by Johnson County Emergency Management. The Burleson Police Department, Fire Department, Fire Marshal's Office and Municipal Court will also be involved. The fair will take place in the east parking lot at the high school on Elk Drive. Get ready for Yappy Hour, Sept. 26

Dogs, dogs, dogs and more dogs are the theme Friday, Sept. 26, when the Burleson Animal Shelter and Lost Oak Winery team up for the fifth Yappy Hour. Everyone, including our Empty the Shelter families, is encouraged to bring their own pets and check out the adoptable pets that the animal shelter staff will bring out for on-site adoptions. Animal shelter staff will be shuttling adoptable pets to the winery from the 775 S.E. John Jones Dr. Burleson Animal Shelter site. Adoption fees range from $55 to $65 and include basic vaccinations and microchipping. Depending on the age of the adoptable pet, the fee also includes a rabies vaccination voucher and heartworm test. The animal shelter is also bringing two gift baskets. A donation will secure a chance for pet owners to take home a basket at the end of the night. The event is open to the public and free of charge. The winery will be donating a portion of the Sept. 26 evening's proceeds to the Burleson Animal Shelter. More

Dispose of medication safely Sept. 27

The City, in partnership with the Drug Enforcement Administration, will host a Drug Take Back Event on Saturday, September 27, at 133 N. Main St. The event is 10 a.m.-2 p.m. The Burleson Police Department and Citizens On Patrol coordinate the local event. Residents may drop off unused, expired or unwanted medications, in both pill and liquid form, for safe disposal. This includes over-the-counter as well as prescription drugs. Drug Take Back events provide a way for patients, caregivers, and pet owners to dispose of controlled substance medications such as painkillers, sedatives, and stimulants like ADHD drugs instead of flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash. FAQs of trash & recycling collection!

Do you know the FAQs of trash and curbside recycling collection? Disposable, weatherproof garbage bags are required for pick-up. Bags cannot be placed in garbage cans. It is a violation of City of Burleson ordinances to place garbage on the curb more than 12 hours in advance of the regular collection day. The City holidays are New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. Your trash and curbside recycling will not be picked up on these holidays. If your pick-up day is a holiday, your trash will be picked up on the next scheduled pick-up day. Your curbside recycling will be picked up the following week. If your recycling bin is overflowing, take advantage of the Recycling Center, located at 620 Memorial Plaza. The center is a drop-off collection site for newsprint (no phone books), magazines, white paper, aluminum, plastics 1-5 and 7, tin and glass. The center is open to the public on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. You must be a resident of Burleson (show your solid waste bill) to use the center. You can also request an extra recycling bin. If we haven't answered all of your questions or you want to request another bin, call the Municipal Service Center at 817-426-9830 and they will be happy to help you!

Veterans Memorial Plaza is getting a makeover in time for Nov. 8's tribute

When military veterans gather at Veterans Memorial Plaza on Nov. 8 for the City's annual Military Veteran Tribute, the plaza will have a whole new look (click on this link to see the design which encompasses all of the Plaza's amenities, including the eagle). Also, with the Plaza's renovation comes all new veteran bricks. The old bricks can be retrieved at the Nov. 8 Military Veteran Tribute or after Nov. 8 at the Burleson Public Library, 248 S.W. Johnson Ave. The new plaza will be able to accommodate 3,024 veteran bricks, two times what is currently on display. The new bricks contain the name, branch of service, and the name of conflicts in which the veteran served. To add a brick to the plaza, call the Burleson Public Library at 817-426-9212 or go to the Operation Remember page on the City website. The Nov. 8 Military Veteran Tribute kicks off at 2 p.m. at the plaza at 298 E. Renfro St. (corner of Renfro and I-35W service road). For more information about the tribute, call the parks and recreation department at 817-426-9104.

Mosquito
Starve those mosquitoes!
Mosquitoes love to feed on your family, friends and pets. But there is a way to starve them. Drain. Drain is the fourth D of the 4-Ds (DEET, dress, dawn/dusk, and drain), in combatting mosquitoes. Check for standing water around your home and business. The most common breeding grounds are buckets and garbage cans, ornamental ponds, wading pools, tree holes, gutters, tarps, toys, flower pots and saucers, water dishes for your pet, wheel barrows, rain barrels, bird baths, boats and tires. Mosquito season in Burleson typically runs through October, with peak activity in August.  Be on heightened alert. Use insect repellents that contain DEET or any other EPA approved insect repellent. Wear long sleeves and long pants when you are outside. And, dusk and dawn are the times of day you should try to stay indoors. The mosquito that causes the most problem in this area has a short flight range, so if you are having a mosquito problem, look in your immediate area. The breeding ground may be closer than you think. Read More
