Tip-A-Cop at Grumps on Sept. 29

Save the date, enjoy a burger and fries, tip your waiter or waitress, and support your local police department. It's that simple. It's called Tip-A-Cop. Make plans to stop by Grumps of Burleson on Monday, Sept. 29, 5 p.m.-9 p.m. and the tips and a portion of the nightly proceeds will go to the Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association (BCPAAA). Police officers will be serving you your choice of a hamburger or cheeseburger, fries or chips and soda or tea all for just $8. BCPAA members will refill your drink and clear the tables. In the past, the BCPAAA members have provided the Burleson Police Department with pursuit spikes, all the initial uniforms for the Honor Guard (valued at approximately $3,300), purchased four-six new bikes for the department's bicycle unit (and established a maintenance fund for the bikes), and helped raise funds for equipment for the Citizens On Patrol members. We'll take recyclables off your hands!

Can't wait to recycle? You can always go to the City's Compost/Mulch/Recycling Center at 610 Memorial Plaza (next to Burleson Memorial Park and behind Fire Station #2). Residents are welcome to drop off recyclables or pick up free mulch on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. The center will accept the same recyclables that you leave at the curb every week. There is no charge to drop off your recyclables, but you must be a resident of the City (proof of residency such as a water bill is required). For more details call 817-426-9832.

Get ready for Yappy Hour, Sept. 26

Dogs, dogs, dogs and more dogs are the theme Friday, Sept. 26, when the Burleson Animal Shelter and Lost Oak Winery team up for the fifth Yappy Hour. Everyone, including our Empty the Shelter families, is encouraged to bring their own pets and check out the adoptable pets that the animal shelter staff will bring out for on-site adoptions. Animal shelter staff will be shuttling adoptable pets to the winery from the 775 S.E. John Jones Dr. Burleson Animal Shelter site. Adoption fees range from $55 to $65 and include basic vaccinations and microchipping. Depending on the age of the adoptable pet, the fee also includes a rabies vaccination voucher and heartworm test. The animal shelter is also bringing two gift baskets. A donation will secure a chance for pet owners to take home a basket at the end of the night. The event is open to the public and free of charge. The winery will be donating a portion of the Sept. 26 evening's proceeds to the Burleson Animal Shelter. More

Veterans Memorial Plaza is getting a makeover in time for Nov. 8's tribute

When military veterans gather at Veterans Memorial Plaza on Nov. 8 for the annual Military Veteran Tribute, the plaza will have a whole new look. With the renovation, the plaza will be able to accommodate 3,024 veteran bricks, more than twice what is currently on display. The bricks contain the name, branch of service, and the name of conflicts in which the veteran served. To add a brick to the plaza, call the Burleson Public Library at 817-426-9212 or go to the Operation Remember page on the City website. The Nov. 8 tribute kicks off at 2 p.m. at the plaza at 298 E. Renfro St. (corner of Renfro and I-35W service road). For more information about the tribute, call the parks and recreation department at 817-426-9104.

Dispose of medication safely Sept. 27

The City, in partnership with the Drug Enforcement Administration, will be hosting a Drug Take Back Event on Saturday, September 27, at the old City service center, 133 N. Main St. The event is 10 a.m.-2 p.m. The Burleson Police Department and Citizens On Patrol coordinate the local event. Residents may drop off unused, expired or unwanted medications, in both pill and liquid form, for safe disposal. This includes over-the-counter as well as prescription drugs. The Drug Take Back events provide a way for patients, caregivers, and pet owners to dispose of controlled substance medications such as painkillers, sedatives, and stimulants like ADHD drugs instead of flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash.

Police Explorers are ready to compete

In July, Burleson Police Explorer Post #4911 won second place in the Intoxicated Driver event at a multi-day competition for police explorers at the University of Texas at Arlington. In October, the explorers hope to compete again at the Alamo Area Police Explorer competition, where they won first place in the Domestic Violence scenario in 2013. Two teams of four explorers from the Burleson post engaged in life-like law enforcement scenarios July 10-12 at UTA. Post #4911 was one of more than 90 teams from law enforcement agencies statewide to compete. The Explorer Post raised more than $3,500 to attend the UTA competition by hosting a spaghetti dinner and garnering generous donations from local businesses and organizations. The students are currently raising funds to attend the Alamo Area Police Explorer competition in October. More

Mosquito
Starve those mosquitoes!
Mosquitoes love to feed on your family, friends and pets. But there is a way to starve them. Drain. Drain is the fourth D of the 4-Ds (DEET, dress, dawn/dusk, and drain), in combatting mosquitoes. Check for standing water around your home and business. The most common breeding grounds are buckets and garbage cans, ornamental ponds, wading pools, tree holes, gutters, tarps, toys, flower pots and saucers, water dishes for your pet, wheel barrows, rain barrels, bird baths, boats and tires. Mosquito season in Burleson typically runs through October, with peak activity in August.  Be on heightened alert. Use insect repellents that contain DEET or any other EPA approved insect repellent. Wear long sleeves and long pants when you are outside. And, dusk and dawn are the times of day you should try to stay indoors. The mosquito that causes the most problem in this area has a short flight range, so if you are having a mosquito problem, look in your immediate area. The breeding ground may be closer than you think. Read More
