Dispose of medication safely at Sept. 27 Drug Take Back event
The City, in partnership with the Drug Enforcement Administration, will be hosting a Drug Take Back Event on Saturday, September 27, at the old City service center, 133 N. Main St. The event is 10 a.m.-2 p.m. The Burleson Police Department and Citizens On Patrol coordinate the local event. Residents may drop off unused, expired or unwanted medications, in both pill and liquid form, for safe disposal. This includes over-the-counter as well as prescription drugs. The Drug Take Back events provide a way for patients, caregivers, and pet owners to dispose of controlled substance medications such as painkillers, sedatives, and stimulants like ADHD drugs instead of flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash. Can you hunt inside Burleson city limits and/or in annexed areas?
Dove season starts next week, and the City has fielded a few questions about the state laws regarding hunting inside the city limits and in annexed areas. Texas Senate Bill 1742 addresses what types of weapons can be fired on annexed land after Sept. 1, 1981. According to the bill, "A shotgun, air rifle or pistol, BB gun, or bow and arrow can be discharged on a property that was annexed after Sept. 1, 1981 and is 10 acres or more, and more than 1) 1,000 feet from any public land, school, day care or hospital; 2) 600 feet from any residential subdivision and multifamily residential complex; 3) 150 feet from a residence or occupied building on another property. A center fire or rim fire or pistol can be discharged on a property that was annexed after Sept. 1, 1981, and is 50 acres or more, and more than 1) 1,000 feet from any public land, school, day care or hospital. 2) 600 feet from any residential subdivision and multifamily residential complex, 3) 300 feet from a residence or occupied building on another property. To read more about the bill that was signed in 2009, go to Texas Legislature Online. For more information about the laws, please contact the game warden in your county.

Starve those mosquitoes!
Mosquitoes love to feed on your family, friends and pets. But there is a way to starve them. Drain. Drain is the fourth D of the 4-Ds (DEET, dress, dawn/dusk, and drain), in combatting mosquitoes. Check for standing water around your home and business. The most common breeding grounds are buckets and garbage cans, ornamental ponds, wading pools, tree holes, gutters, tarps, toys, flower pots and saucers, water dishes for your pet, wheel barrows, rain barrels, bird baths, boats and tires. Mosquito season in Burleson typically runs through October, with peak activity in August. Be on heightened alert. Use insect repellents that contain DEET or any other EPA approved insect repellent. Wear long sleeves and long pants when you are outside. And, dusk and dawn are the times of day you should try to stay indoors. The mosquito that causes the most problem in this area has a short flight range, so if you are having a mosquito problem, look in your immediate area. The breeding ground may be closer than you think. Read More
