Fifty-three pets were adopted from Burleson on Empty the Shelter Day
Dog and puppy tails were wagging, kitten and cat tails were swishing, and "Adopted by the Burleson Animal Shelter" bandanas were abundant as 53 pets found their forever homes Aug. 16 during Empty the Shelter Day. The Burleson Animal Shelter was one of more than three dozen animal shelters and rescues across the Metroplex that participated in the effort to find homes for hundreds of pets. As of 5 p.m. on Aug. 16, The City of Irving, which spearheaded this effort, reported 2,360 pet adoptions for Empty the Shelter Day. In Burleson, approximately 421 visitors came through the Burleson Animal Shelter door Aug. 16. Of the 53 adoptions, 28 were kittens and cats and 25 were puppies and dogs (read more). Pets adopted from the Burleson shelter have the basic vaccinations, are implanted with a microchip that will identify them if they ever get lost, and head to their new homes with goody bags filled with collars, treats and toys. All adoptive pet owners must sign a legal contract agreeing to have the adopted pet spayed or neutered, as required by state law. To see pictures of the pets adopted on Empty the Shelter Day, go to the Burleson Animal Shelter Facebook.

Flashing yellow arrows will be installed at 5 intersections on Hwy. 174

Keep an eye out for flashing yellow arrow signals on Hwy. 174. The Texas Department of Transportation issued a news release Aug. 19 saying that the flashing yellow arrow signals will be installed at five intersections on Hwy. 174, including Hillery Street, Renfro Street, Ellison Street, Newton Drive and Summercrest Boulevard. A solid green arrow means drivers can proceed with a left turn; solid yellow means drivers should prepare to stop; a solid red arrow means drivers turning left must stop and wait; and a flashing yellow arrow means drivers may proceed with a left turn after yielding to oncoming traffic and pedestrians. The installation should be complete in September, weather permitting. For more information, this is a link to the TxDOT news release. You can also view a diagram of what the new signalization means. And to see a video of what the traffic flow will look like with the new arrows, go to the TxDOT video on YouTube.

Mosquito
Starve those mosquitoes!
Mosquitoes love to feed on your family, friends and pets. But there is a way to starve them. Drain. Drain is the fourth D of the 4-Ds (DEET, dress, dawn/dusk, and drain), in combatting mosquitoes. Check for standing water around your home and business. The most common breeding grounds are buckets and garbage cans, ornamental ponds, wading pools, tree holes, gutters, tarps, toys, flower pots and saucers, water dishes for your pet, wheel barrows, rain barrels, bird baths, boats and tires. Mosquito season in Burleson typically runs through October, with peak activity in August.  Be on heightened alert. Use insect repellents that contain DEET or any other EPA approved insect repellent. Wear long sleeves and long pants when you are outside. And, dusk and dawn are the times of day you should try to stay indoors. The mosquito that causes the most problem in this area has a short flight range, so if you are having a mosquito problem, look in your immediate area. The breeding ground may be closer than you think. Read More
