Be on alert for jury duty scam
Have you been told that you failed to report for jury duty? Did the person claim to be a lieutenant with the Johnson County Sheriff's Office? The Burleson Police Department said they have received multiple reports concerning a jury duty scam that is primarily targeting our older residents. The Johnson County Sheriff's Office reported this scam Aug. 5 in a Wise Eyes Alert. The suspect claims to be Lt. Tommy Donaldson from the JCSO and says that there is an arrest warrant for the person for not showing up for jury duty. The caller then tells the person to go by Green Dot MoneyPak, then give the suspect the code on the back of the card. The suspect then has access to all of the funds that were loaded on to the Green Dot MoneyPak card. If the transaction is completed, the suspect says the warrant will go away. Here's what you need to know - the Johnson County Sheriff's Office does not employ anybody by the name of Lt. Tommy Donaldson. Financial transactions in Johnson County are not handled in this way. And, Green Dot MoneyPak has an approved list of businesses. If you are approached in Burleson with this jury duty scam, please call the Burleson Police Department at 817-426-9903 to report the incident. If you live in Johnson County, outside the city limits, please call the JCSO at 817-556-6058.

Library launches year-round reading program, Burleson Reads!
The Burleson Public Library is announcing the launch of Burleson Reads, a yearlong reading program! The Library will provide parents the option of tracking their children's reading throughout the school year and earn incentives for doing so. With the successful launch of the new online participation program during Summer Reading Club, the Burleson Reads program captures the convenience and fun of participation . . . making it summer reading all year long. Children aren't the only ones who can enjoy the program. Adults and teens are also included, but, unlike the children's incentives, adults and teens will be eligible for monthly prize drawings just for participating. Registration is ongoing, available online, through May 31, 2015. More

Empty the (Animal) Shelter Aug. 16
Saturday is the day! The Burleson Animal Shelter is participating in Empty the Shelter Day, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., at 775 SE John Jones Dr. Empty the Shelter Day is an effort to find homes for hundreds of pets across the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. An unprecedented number of cities and animal shelters, both municipal and non-profit, throughout North Texas have joined forces to offer free adoptions that one very special day. This is the largest adoption effort ever held in North Texas and what the partners hope to be the largest multi-city, multi-county adoption event in the United States. You can adopt a dog or cat from the Burleson Animal Shelter on Aug. 16 and the most you will pay is $10 to get your new forever pet current on rabies vaccinations. If the adoptable pet is already current on rabies vaccinations, you get to take your forever friend home for free. Yes, you still have to fill out an adoption application. Keep an eye on the Burleson Animal Services page on Petango to see who is ready to go home with you Aug. 16! You don't have to wait until Aug. 16 to adopt, but the free rate is only good for Aug. 16. The Burleson Animal Shelter is open 11 a.m.-6 p.m., Tuesday-Friday and 11 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturdays for you to stop by and see if your four-legged soul mate is looking for you! The Empty the Shelter event is sponsored by NBC5, Telemundo39 and ASPCA.

Development agreements offer immunity from annexation for 10 years
The City hopes that owners of agricultural property in Burleson's extraterritorial jurisdiction (ETJ) will sign on the dotted line by Sept. 15, 2014, in a joint effort to protect the current use of the land that is outside the city limits, and to ensure how that land will be developed in the future. Development agreement letters, in lieu of annexation, were mailed this week. The City is offering "immunity from annexation" for 10 years, subject to the conditions of the agreement. Eight areas totaling more than 7,500 acres and affecting more than 300 property owners have been identified for potential annexation. These areas are primarily located near and/or along the Chisholm Trail Parkway (121 Tollway), the future Alsbury Boulevard extension to 121, and I-35W south of Bethesda Road. If the property owner receives the letter and refuses to sign the development agreement or if the use of that property is changed, annexation proceedings will commence. More

Starve those mosquitoes!
Mosquitoes love to feed on your family, friends and pets. But there is a way to starve them. Drain. Drain is the fourth D of the 4-Ds (DEET, dress, dawn/dusk, and drain), in combatting mosquitoes. Check for standing water around your home and business. The most common breeding grounds are buckets and garbage cans, ornamental ponds, wading pools, tree holes, gutters, tarps, toys, flower pots and saucers, water dishes for your pet, wheel barrows, rain barrels, bird baths, boats and tires. Mosquito season in Burleson typically runs through October, with peak activity in August. Be on heightened alert. Use insect repellents that contain DEET or any other EPA approved insect repellent. Wear long sleeves and long pants when you are outside. And, dusk and dawn are the times of day you should try to stay indoors. The mosquito that causes the most problem in this area has a short flight range, so if you are having a mosquito problem, look in your immediate area. The breeding ground may be closer than you think. Read More
