Development agreements offer immunity from annexation for 10 years
The City hopes that owners of agricultural property in Burleson's extraterritorial jurisdiction (ETJ) will sign on the dotted line by Sept. 15, 2014, in a joint effort to protect the current use of the land that is outside the city limits, and to ensure how that land will be developed in the future. Development agreement letters, in lieu of annexation, will be in the mail Aug. 11. The City is offering "immunity from annexation" for 10 years, subject to the conditions of the agreement. Eight areas totaling more than 7,500 acres and affecting more than 300 property owners have been identified for potential annexation. These areas are primarily located near and/or along the Chisholm Trail Parkway (121 Tollway), the future Alsbury Boulevard extension to 121, and I-35W south of Bethesda Road. If the property owner receives the letter and refuses to sign the development agreement or if the use of that property is changed, annexation proceedings will commence. More

Crime fighters banded together citywide

There were picnics, cookouts, bounce houses, and more, in neighborhoods all over town on Aug. 5 as Burleson celebrated National Night Out with the rest of the nation. This is National Night Out's 31st year. Community Resource Officer David Wardlaw as well as the police department's command staff, bicycle officers, Citizens On Patrol, Burleson Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association, fire department, fire marshal's office, neighborhood services (animal control, code enforcement, environmental services), the library, and City leaders visited as many National Night Out get-togethers as possible in three hours. Target is the national sponsor for National Night Out. Also on board again this year was 7-11. Joining the group was ADT Security (also a national sponsor) and the Texas Department of Insurance. Apartment communities and neighborhoods joined in the National Night Out effort to raise awareness about organizing and fighting back against crime. National Night Out is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness; generate support and participation in anticrime programs; strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and to let criminals know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back. To see the rest of the pictures, go to Burleson's National Night Out 2014 photo album on the City Facebook page.

Council awards curbside recycling contract to a new contractor
Changing contractors for your curbside recycling collection will be smoother than the City's public works department staff originally thought. The quorum of four city council members voted unanimously Aug. 4 to terminate the recycling collection agreement with Community Waste Disposal, purchase existing bins from CWD, and approve a one-year recycling collection agreement with Progressive Waste Solutions. You will not receive new bins. The City is paying CWD for the existing bins that residents are already using. Progressive is currently the contractor for collection of solid waste/trash for Burleson residents. The good news Monday was that the cost for the existing recycling bins was considerably less than expected. More
Sign up now for Burleson's Sept. 20 Trash Bash
Burleson Trash Bash is Saturday, Sept. 20. What is your commitment? Two hours, 9 a.m.-11 a.m. During the event, volunteers remove litter and debris from retail corridors, waterways, drainage channels, streets, parks, and other public areas. Volunteers of all ages are welcome, but youth participants are required to have adult supervision. After the cleanup, volunteers will convene at Warren Park, 301 S.W. Johnson Ave. Registration starts three weeks prior to the event. You can register online by clicking on the registration form, then download the volunteer information packet. Call the City's environmental services office at 817-426-9832 for more information.
Contact your city council members
Do you want to talk to your city council members? The city of Burleson is not divided into districts so you are represented by the mayor and all six council members. Go to the City Council page in the staff directory on the City website. You can contact all seven at once by using the "Contact your City Council form" or you can call or email them individually. Council meets at city hall on the first and third Mondays at 6 p.m. for a work session and at 7 p.m. for the regular city council meeting.
Citizens Police Academy students learn how it feels to make traffic stop

Have you ever wondered what it was like to be on the other end of a traffic stop? Students in the Burleson Police Department's Citizens Police Academy went through mock traffic stop scenarios July 31 to find out just what officers face when they walk up to a vehicle. The "suspects" were volunteers. The CPA students faced polite drivers, drunk drivers, deaf and mute drivers, drivers who tried to bribe them, and drivers who refused to comply. The Burleson Police Department hosts the free 10-week Citizens Police Academy each year, June-August. The topics include the department's organization, recruiting process, Texas Penal Code, criminal investigations, search and seizure, building searches, traffic law enforcement, narcotics investigation, SWAT, patrol procedures, and more. The classes are as "hands on" as possible. Instructors demonstrate techniques used to search a building for an intruder, then participants practice what they've learned. Participants also solve a homicide scenario by identifying evidence, using investigative techniques, and interviewing witnesses. Students ride along with an officer or monitor the communications office. Check out the rest of the pictures on the City's Facebook page

Do you need a permit for that?

Do you need a permit for that? Building permits are generally required for all new construction, remodels, renovations or enlargements. Permits are also required for repairs or replacement of the parts of a building related to maintenance of structural integrity and systems related to mechanical, electrical, or plumbing. Permits are needed for decks, driveways, sidewalks, lawn sprinklers, patio covers, swimming pools and more. General maintenance projects such as painting, carpeting, wallpapering, replacing or adding cabinets, and trim work are considered cosmetic and do not require a permit. Why do you need a permit? Building permits are required because the City of Burleson has adopted the International Building, Fire, and Mechanical and Plumbing Codes, in addition to National Electrical Codes. Permits ensure conformity of the adopted codes by allowing qualified city inspectors to investigate and examine work. Go to the Permit Information page  on the City website for more information or call 817-426-9632.

Mosquito
Starve those mosquitoes!
Mosquitoes love to feed on your family, friends and pets. But there is a way to starve them. Drain. Drain is the fourth D of the 4-Ds (DEET, dress, dawn/dusk, and drain), in combatting mosquitoes. Check for standing water around your home and business. The most common breeding grounds are buckets and garbage cans, ornamental ponds, wading pools, tree holes, gutters, tarps, toys, flower pots and saucers, water dishes for your pet, wheel barrows, rain barrels, bird baths, boats and tires. Mosquito season in Burleson typically runs through October, with peak activity in August.  Be on heightened alert. Use insect repellents that contain DEET or any other EPA approved insect repellent. Wear long sleeves and long pants when you are outside. And, dusk and dawn are the times of day you should try to stay indoors. The mosquito that causes the most problem in this area has a short flight range, so if you are having a mosquito problem, look in your immediate area. The breeding ground may be closer than you think. Read More
