Citizens Police Academy students crack the case!
Students in the Burleson Police Department's Citizens Police Academy put their knowledge to work July 19 by investigating a mock homicide at a home in Old Town Burleson. The "victim" was Orville. Officers were dispatched to the home to a report of loud noises/yelling. Two "suspects" - Orville's wife Ramona and a man named Bobby Ray - were immediately identified. Detectives arrived and began to interview witnesses and examine the crime scene. That resulted in a motive for Orville's wife, who just inherited a lot of money. Her relationship with Orville was less than cordial. Bobby Ray was a strong suspect as well because he and Orville had had words in the past. Orville was a playboy and one of the girls he was always hitting on was Bobby's girlfriend. The CPA students got the preliminary information concerning the crime from a police officer, examined the mock crime scene, and talked to nosy neighbor Maxine and a neighborhood "floozy." Did they crack the case? Since the Citizens Police Academy is an annual event, we can't tell you "who done it." Sign up next year and find out for yourself! For now, check out the rest of the Mock Homicide pictures on the City Facebook.

Thanks to everyone for hospitality for Small Cities Council's visit
Stuart Gillaspie, Burleson city councilmember and chairman of the National League of Cities Small Cities Council, took a few minutes at the July 21 council meeting to thank all of those who made the Small Cities Council conference in Burleson a success. The group arrived on June 11. Gillaspie said "just about every City department, numerous organizations and many local businesses gave of their time, effort and services to make the stay a wonderful success. I wanted to thank everyone involved in helping show our peers from around the nation what we already know . . . how inviting, dynamic, advanced and thriving Burleson is." The Small Cities Council is comprised of more than 150 representatives from member cities with populations of 50,000 or less. Elected officials shared best practices and discussed the implications of federal policy and funding decisions on small cities and towns. Council connected with library board!
Mayor Pro Tem Dan McClendon and Councilmember Ronnie Johnson stayed until the library closed its doors Tuesday night when they met with the Library Board for a Connect With Council. Questions and answers went back and forth with the board for more than an hour after each councilmember talked about their own backgrounds. The council members learned more about the responsibilities and purposes of the board and the Friends of the Library, as well as what the library needs today, as opposed to 1995 when the doors first opened at 248 S.W. Johnson Ave. The lively discussion included questions about development, roads, code enforcement, and more.

Starve those mosquitoes!
Mosquitoes love to feed on your family, friends and pets. But there is a way to starve them. Drain. Drain is the fourth D of the 4-Ds (DEET, dress, dawn/dusk, and drain), in combatting mosquitoes. Check for standing water around your home and business. The most common breeding grounds are buckets and garbage cans, ornamental ponds, wading pools, tree holes, gutters, tarps, toys, flower pots and saucers, water dishes for your pet, wheel barrows, rain barrels, bird baths, boats and tires. Mosquito season in Burleson typically runs through October, with peak activity in August. Be on heightened alert. Use insect repellents that contain DEET or any other EPA approved insect repellent. Wear long sleeves and long pants when you are outside. And, dusk and dawn are the times of day you should try to stay indoors. The mosquito that causes the most problem in this area has a short flight range, so if you are having a mosquito problem, look in your immediate area. The breeding ground may be closer than you think. Read More
