Burleson hosted annual open house in honor of National Police Week
The raindrops held off until after 5 p.m. on May 13 for the Burleson Police Department's annual Open House. The event coincides with National Police Week. The open house featured displays by the SWAT team, hostage negotiators, Citizens Police Academy, Citizens On Patrol, traffic unit, sworn bicycle patrol, Burleson Police Officers Association, school resource officers, community resource officers (crime prevention) and public safety communication specialists. The Tri-County Auto Burglary and Theft Task Force and Johnson County Crime Stoppers also participated. The police department's honor guard presented the colors (flag raising) and conducted a firing party to pay respects to all the law enforcement officers who have paid the ultimate sacrifice in defense of freedom. Burleson has lost one officer, Janice Vanderveer, in the line of duty. She died in December 1987 while directing traffic around a crash site. To see the rest of the pictures go to the Burleson Police Department Open House album on the City Facebook page.

Incumbents win re-election to council
The incumbents - Shetter, Johnson, Green and Aiken - won re-election to their seats on the Burleson City Council May 10. Only two of the races were contested. Robert Gray filed for Place 6, currently held by Ronnie Johnson, and John Glen Garrison filed for mayor, currently held by Ken Shetter. Councilmembers Rick Green and Matt Aiken did not draw opponents. Shetter retained his role as mayor with 79.51 percent of the vote and Johnson was re-elected with 66.67 percent of the vote. Shetter is an attorney/executive director; Johnson is a retired business owner; Green is a realtor; and Aiken is an attorney. Due to the Nov. 5, 2013, change to the charter, the May 10 winners will be serving three year terms instead of two year terms. The four council members will be sworn in at the special called council meeting/budget workshop on Wednesday, May 21.

Fire department welcomes two newest firefighters at badge pinning ceremony
Firefighters Tommy Carlton and Josh Stanton officially became firefighters with the Burleson Fire Department Monday night, May 12, during a Badge Pinning Ceremony at Fire Station #1. Family members did the honors of pinning the badges on the firefighters' uniforms, then Carlton and Stanton took the oath of office. Chief Gary Wisdom pointed out Dr. Burton Clark's Farewell to the National Fire Academy, presented April 18, 2014, which was included in the program. "As a member of the fire service discipline, what I know and what I do not know has life and death consequences for me and others. Therefore a fire service calling demands my highest level of professionalism . . . our noblest deeds of daring are measured by having the courage to do each task 100 percent correct, 100 percent of the time, especially when others around us are not, because lives are at stake . . . Thank God for firefighters." To see the rest of the pictures, go to the Badge Pinning album on the City Facebook.

Technology speeds up the process for patrons at Burleson Public Library
Technology is improving service at the Burleson Public Library! RFID - radio frequency identification - tags are attached to library materials. When items are placed on special equipment, the tag is temporarily energized, and the computer recognizes the title and can adjust the security setting depending on if the item is being checked out or returned. This makes self-checkout easy for patrons and the staff (reports show that the library staff has checked out more than 414,000 titles). The technology includes a new security gate system, better inventory control, and a mobile device that allows staff to check out materials to patrons anywhere in the library. Read More
