Meet Burleson's new police chief June 4

Stop by city hall on June 4 to meet the Burleson Police Department's new chief, Billy Cordell. The reception is 3 p.m.-5 p.m. in the council chambers at 141 W. Renfro St. Cordell will be sworn in as police chief at the June 2 city council meeting. The swearing-in will take place at 7 p.m. at city hall. Cordell was one of 78 to apply when the position opened in December 2013. He has been with the Fort Worth Police Department since July 1985 and served as a deputy chief since 2011. More

Election Day is Saturday, May 10
Did you vote early? If not, Election Day is Saturday, May 10, 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Mark your ballot at 113 S. Wilson St. Two of the four races for city council are contested. Robert Gray filed for Place 6, currently held by Ronnie Johnson, and John Glen Garrison filed for mayor, currently held by Ken Shetter. Today is deadline for MYC nominations
Do you want to be a link between the youth of Burleson and the Burleson City Council? If you are between 13 and 19 years old as of June 1, 2014, you can be nominated to serve on the Burleson Mayor's Youth Council (MYC). The deadline for nominations is today, May 9. The goal of the MYC is to identify current issues affecting area youth, advise the city council on teen-related matters, plan activities and projects for Burleson youth, and maintain youth council bylaws and structure. To be eligible for the council, you must live in Burleson or in Burleson's extraterritorial jurisdiction, have a passion to be the voice of Burleson youth, and show leadership qualities within the community. Read More  
Honor officers at police open house May 13
The Burleson Police Department is hosting its annual open house on Tuesday, May 13, 3 p.m.-6 p.m., in the front parking lot at 225 W. Renfro St. The open house will feature displays by the SWAT team, hostage negotiators, Citizens Police Academy, Citizens On Patrol, traffic unit, Burleson Police Officers Association, school resource officers, community resource officers (crime prevention) and public safety communication specialists. At 4 p.m., the police department's honor guard will present the colors (flag raising) and conduct a firing party to pay respects to all the law enforcement officers who have paid the ultimate sacrifice in defense of freedom. Do you get emergency notifications?
If there is a severe thunderstorm warning or tornado warning issued for Burleson, the City's emergency operations team will notify you if your name and landline phone numbers are currently listed in the white pages or yellow pages, or you previously signed up for the City's Blackboard Connect system. If the number 817-426-9858 pops up on your Caller ID, that is the City calling you with an emergency message. Please answer and confirm that you received the call. You can choose how you receive the emergency alerts. Messages can be sent by cell phone, landline, email, text message, fax, pager, and more, but you must opt in to the Everbridge emergency notification system to customize your notifications. Blaze of Glory brings Bon Jovi to Old Town

You Give Love a Bad Name . . . . you'll hear that and more at the City's 2014 Hot Sounds of Summer concert series in Old Town Burleson. Blaze of Glory, a Bon Jovi tribute band, takes the stage June 6 in the second of five free 90-minutes concerts. The fun starts at 7:30 p.m., every Friday, May 30-June 27 at the corner of Wilson and Ellison streets (124 W. Ellison St.). The series kicks off May 30 with Buddy Whittington (Eric Clapton blues), followed by Le Freak (disco) on June 13, Sgt. Peppers Lonely Bluegrass Band (Beatles) on June 20 and the Tejas Brothers (honky tonk country) on June 27. Bring your blankets and lawn chairs, but chances are you'll be up dancing to the music.

Celebrate Mother's Day with Brunch

The Terrace at Hidden Creek (the restaurant at Hidden Creek Golf Course) is hosting a Mother's Day Brunch Sunday, May 11. The Grand Buffet will be open 10 a.m.- 3 p.m. and will include handmade scones, biscuits and gravy, scrambled eggs, crepes, bacon, sausage, proscuitto wrapped asparagus, glazed ham, smoked salmon spread with assorted bread, and fruit with sweet cream dip for only $20 per person. They will also be serving bottomless mimosas! This event is reservation-only, so call 817-447-4444, ext. 6, to reserve your seat today! The golf course is located at 555 E. Hidden Creek Pkwy.

Want an insider's look
at law enforcement?

Do you want an insider's understanding of the police department? Apply for the Burleson Police Department's Citizens Police Academy, which starts June 5. This is a 10-week program, every Thursday, 6:30 p.m.-9:30 p.m. The deadline to apply is May 30. You'll learn about the department's organization, recruiting process, the Texas Penal Code, criminal investigations, search and seizure, building searches, traffic law enforcement, narcotics investigation, SWAT, patrol procedures, and more. Homeschoolers, the library wants you!
The Burleson Public Library is hosting an open house for homeschoolers on Saturday, May 17, 12 p.m.-2 p.m. The event will kick off with a presentation geared to those who are considering homeschooling. Immediately following, a presentation will be given to showcase library resources available to homeschoolers such as the youth robotics lab, available online databases, the interlibrary loan system, and more. Everyone spring cleaned
Vehicles were lined out to Renfro Street before 8:30 a.m. for the twice-a-year Household Hazardous Waste, Electronic Recycling and Paper Shredding event May 3. City staff from the Neighborhood Services Department, Public Works and the Fire Department directed traffic, unloaded vehicles, and helped sort the recyclables. If you missed this collection, the next one is November 8, 2014. The events are only available to residents who live inside the Burleson city limits (proof of residency including a City water or solid waste bill is required). Drug Take Back event was successful
The Burleson Police Department, in partnership with the DEA, collected 293 pounds of unused, expired or unwanted medications, in both pill and liquid form, for safe disposal on April 26. This included over-the-counter as well as prescription drugs. At the Oct. 26, 2013 event, the City collected 247 pounds of medication. Keep an eye on your City website and Facebook page for news about a second Drug Take Back Event in the fall.
Play golf and swim on Memorial Day

Most City facilities will be closed on Memorial Day, May 26. There will be no trash or curbside recycling collection May 26. The BRiCk will be closed on Memorial Day, but staff will be celebrating Splash Weekend at the BRiCk's outdoor pool. Admission to the outdoor pool is free on Memorial Day, only. Hidden Creek Golf Course is open for normal hours Memorial Day weekend. The Burleson Public Library is closed on Sunday and Monday, as is the Burleson Animal Shelter. The Senior Activity Center will be open Saturday, May 24, from 8 a.m.-12 p.m., and 4 p.m.- 8 p.m., then closed Sunday and Monday. The City's compost/mulch/recycling center will be open for normal hours over the Memorial Day weekend. Read More

Paw Pals deadline is extended to May 16

The deadline for the Burleson Animal Shelter's Paw Paws Animal Care Academy has been extended to May 16! The class is limited to 15 students who must either live in Burleson or attend school in Burleson. Paw Pals takes place June 7, 14, 21 and 28 at the shelter. Class is 90 minutes, noon to 1:30 p.m. The sessions include bite prevention/responsible pet ownership/veterinary care, animal grooming, and animal training. The application is available at the shelter, 775 SE John Jones Dr., and online. For more information about Paw Pals, call 817-426-9283.

The name, title, phone number and email for every councilmember and City staff member is on the City website. Simply click on Contact Us at the bottom of the home page.

City meetings are on video 

Do you want to know how a vote or discussion went at a Burleson City Council meeting or budget workshop? View the video, live or at your leisure, on the City website. Click on the meeting date, then click on the item you are interested in. There is also a tab for streaming video of the Planning and Zoning Commission. Official minutes of council and commission meetings and workshops and work sessions are not posted on the City website until the city council and/or commission members have approved those minutes at their next scheduled meeting.
