Butler earns Employee of the Quarter
David Butler went "above and beyond his daily duties" in coordinating the City's new "state-of-the-art radio system." That dedication earned the fire investigator/inspector the City's first Employee of the Quarter honor for 2014. Butler was honored at the April 21 city council meeting. The system is a regional system that, when it is all done, will cover all of Tarrant, Johnson and some surrounding counties. Read More
Water restrictions are permanent

The outdoor water restrictions that were most recently enacted in Burleson in June 2013 are now permanent due to a required change in the City's water conservation plan. Since the City of Burleson purchases its water from the City of Fort Worth, Burleson must approve a drought contingency plan that mirrors Fort Worth's plan. This month, Fort Worth made the maximum twice per week landscape restriction permanent, year-round. These permanent landscape watering restrictions are the same as the temporary ones enacted in June 2013. If your residential address ends in an even number (0, 2, 4, 6, 8) you can use an irrigation system to water your landscape on Wednesdays and Saturdays. If your residential address ends in an odd number (1, 3, 5, 7, 9) you can use an irrigation system to water on Thursdays and Sundays. All non-residential water locations (apartment complexes, businesses, industries, parks, medians, etc.) may water on Tuesdays and Fridays. Monday is a no-water day.

Don't miss family fun of fishing and camping

It's not too late to sign up for the Far Out Family Fun Campout & Fishing Adventures April 26-27. The City is sponsoring the event that starts at 1 p.m. on Saturday and ends at 8 a.m. on Sunday at Bailey Lake. Children of all ages are welcome. Bring the whole family ($10 per family of five if you pre-register; $15 at the event). Each child must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Advance registration is open until 8 p.m. on April 25 at the BRiCk, 550 N.W. Summercrest Blvd. Boy Scouts and Master Naturalists will guide you through nature trails, help you fish, and assist with outdoor games and activities, including campfire stories and skits. There will be hot dog roasting and marshmallow toasting. Bring snacks, a tent, fishing pole, bait, flashlight and bug spray. Leave pets and all open flamed lanterns and grills at home. Call the BRick at 817-426-9104.

Buy your books at the library!

The Friends of the Library will host the group's annual book sale on Friday, April 25, 10 a.m.-6 p.m., and Saturday, April 26, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., at the Burleson Public Library. The sale includes hardcover and softcover books for all ages, including popular fiction and nonfiction (biographies, cooking, self-help, history, literature and more). You can buy a bag of books, of your choosing, for $10. Single books range in price from 50 cents to $2.

Lo Gonzalez had winning artwork for Trash-Off t-shirt design contest
London "Lo" Gonzalez' artwork was number one in the City's Don't Mess With Texas Trash-Off t-shirt design contest. This Saturday, April 26, the 200-plus volunteers who have signed up to beautify Burleson will be wearing t-shirts sporting Gonzalez' winning design. Keep Burleson Beautiful, a non-profit organization, had between 100 and 150 entries to choose from. Gonzalez' artwork features a human hand, and a tree branch, entwined to create a heart. Expect to see a lot of the green t-shirts Saturday for the 16th annual Don't Mess with Texas Trash-Off event hosted by Keep Burleson Beautiful. Cleanup activities start at 9 a.m. and wrap at 11 a.m. Participants will remove litter and debris from retail corridors, drainage channels, streets, parks and other public areas. Following the cleanup, volunteers are invited to Warren Park, 301 S.W. Johnson Ave., for a free pizza lunch and raffle prizes. Volunteers of all ages are welcome but youth participants are required to have adult supervision. To receive a free t-shirt, volunteers are asked to register. You can sign up online or call 817-426-9842.

Mayor Vera Calvin honored with dedication of plaza

Blustery winds didn't keep Mayor Vera Calvin and friends from the dedication of the Mayor Vera Calvin Plaza April 14. The plaza, which includes the Burleson Visitors Center, Rail Car #330 and Parlor Car #411, was dedicated in the former mayor's honor in August 2013. Calvin is the City of Burleson's only female mayor. She was appointed mayor in 1988, elected mayor in 1989 for a one-year term, and elected again in 1990 for a full two-year term. The successes during her tenure on council include the 20/20 Comprehensive plan, purchasing both the Burleson Visitors Center and the recycling center, the initiation of DARE in the public schools (the city partnered with the BISD), and construction of the City's first stand-alone police station. For more pictures go to the Dedication of Mayor Vera Calvin Plaza album on Facebook.

Main St. The event is 9 a.m.-11 a.m. and is only available to residents who live inside the Burleson city limits (proof of residency including a City water or solid waste bill is required). Household hazardous waste items are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. All electronics and appliances will be taken for free. TVs will not be accepted at this event.
