Daylight saving time March 9 triggers cleanup at Burleson Memorial Park
Daylight saving time means the City's cemetery, Burleson Memorial Park, will get spruced up. The clocks spring forward one hour at 2 a.m. on Sunday, March 9. All items that are not permanently attached to the memorial or marker will be removed after the time changes. Items will be removed from gravesites the week of March 9-15. The removal includes fresh or artificial flowers and other items that are hanging, sitting or lying on the gravesite. This cleanup occurs twice a year, always as daylight saving time begins (March) and ends (November). For a copy of the flower rules and regulations, contact Lucas Blessing Funeral Home, 518 S.W. Police will crack down on underage DUI/alcohol over spring break
Burleson students are on spring break March 10-14. The Burleson Police Department is joining forces with other law enforcement agencies across Texas for the Texas Spring Break traffic safety campaign, "DWI Hangovers Don't Go Away." According to TxDOT, in 2013, out of all the driving under the influence (DUI)-alcohol crashes in Texas, over 57 percent involved drivers between the ages of 17 and 34. During the same time period, 48 percent of people killed in DUI-alcohol crashes in Texas were in the age group of 17-34. Last year, Spring Break DUI-alcohol related fatalities in Texas were up more than 23 percent compared to Texas Spring Break 2012. The legal limit in Texas for intoxication is .08 BAC (blood or breath alcohol concentration.) However, when a law enforcement officer has probable cause, based on the driver's behavior, drivers can be arrested with a BAC below .08. If you are under 21, it is illegal for you to drive with any detectable amount of alcohol in your system. Parents can be held criminally and civilly responsible for the actions of their minor children if they provide alcohol to them. Read More

Donate dog food or a book for Pot of Gold Scavenger Hunt at Russell Farm
A new book or dog food/supplies is the only admission price for the Saturday, March 22 St. Patrick's Day Pot of Gold Scavenger Hunt at the City's Russell Farm. Miranda Maceyra, a 16-year-old Centennial High School student, is hosting a Girl Scout community service project at the historic farm between 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. The fun is geared toward children, nine-16 years old. Staff from the library, the animal shelter, environmental services and Teen Court will be at the event to spread the word about what they have to offer the community and what a resident could offer if they choose to volunteer for the City. Adoptable pets will make an appearance too in hopes of on-site adoptions. The event may also benefit the Meals-On-Wheels of Johnson and Ellis counties' Ani-Meals program. This program provides food for the pets of Meals-On-Wheels clients. Volunteers will provide tours of the historical farm. The 30-acre farm was donated to the City by Charlie and Louise Boren in 2011. The farm is part of the City's parks and recreation department and is open to the community. Read More

If tragedy strikes, we need to know if you have special needs. That's why the City partnered with the Everbridge mass notification system. Go to the Everbridge link, on the City website and click on "sign up" at the bottom of the page. Everbridge will ask for a username and password, your first and last name, a security question, and a registration email. Once you have signed up, you create your profile. On your profile, there is a place to indicate any special needs so first responders will be aware of the issues. Special needs include hearing, vision, speech and mobility impairment; oxygen required; refrigerated medications; service animal required; and language interpreter required. The mass notification system is primarily used for severe thunderstorm and tornado warnings.
