They'll be sprucing up Old Town in 2014
Old Town Burleson could get a whole new look in 2014. Justin Bond, the City's economic development manager, talked about the growth and challenges, and options to tackle those challenges, during a council work session meeting Feb. 17. No action was taken by council. The challenges include the upkeep of common space, promotion of Old Town District events and a convenient flow of parking. Improvement projects that were highlighted in the focus area - bound by Renfro, Main, Eldred and Warren streets - include a Main Street mobility upgrade, alley connections, light poles/banners, street signs, parking signs, landscaping and trash receptacles. The price tag for that list is an estimated $415,000 and would be paid for using funds already designated for tourism and/or the Old Town district. Read More |
Efforts to prevent DWIs earned two officers Community Policing Award
Increased personal efforts to prevent DWIs and underage drinking in Old Town snagged two officers the Burleson Police Department's Most Outstanding Community Policing Award. Officer Jonathan Gomez and Officer Mark Pate were honored at the department's banquet. According to the nomination, the officers "noticed several issues with the influx of establishments that serve alcohol in Old Town. The officers took extra steps and contacted the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission for assistance in educating the staff at these establishments." The officers were hired by the Burleson Police Department in the summer of 2010. Read More |

City employee awarded for his TIP
An 8-year employee of the City was honored for his money-saving tip for the City. Kevin Freeman's suggestion was to replace less cost efficient signal and overhead lights with full LED lights. The goal was to use less energy and save the City money. After one complete year of implementation and reporting, the City is seeing a cost savings of 28 percent. Five intersections have been converted to full LED lights and more lights are on schedule for the upgrade. Read More |

The BPD's Outstanding Character Award goes to . . . Vicki McElroy
She's not a sworn peace officer and she's not a civilian employee at the Burleson Police Department. But the leadership that Vicki McElroy displays with the department's Citizens On Patrol program was so outstanding that it garnered her the 2013 Ofelia Blair Outstanding Character Award. According to the nomination letter, McElroy's "integrity, humility and passion are her prominent character traits. Her dedication to the success of the police department is immeasurable." The award winner is the assistant Citizens On Patrol (COPS) coordinator and she is a member of the Burleson Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association. She started attending the City's free civilian academies in 2001. Read More |
Please, move over or slow down . . .
State law requires drivers in Texas to yield to and/or move over and slow down for police, fire and emergency vehicles and Department of Transportation workers. The City's public works department wants to remind drivers to extend the same courtesy to City employees who are working in or alongside the roadway. The Move Over law requires motorists to move out of the lane closest to the vehicle when possible or reduce their speed to 20 miles per hour below the posted limit. If the road does not offer multiple lanes, the driver must slow down. On roadways with posted speed limits of 25 miles per hour or less, drivers must reduce their speed to 5 miles per hour. Your City employees thank you! |
