Mack is Rotary's Unsung Hero
Dedication, attitude, and hard work paid off for the BRiCk's Jessica Mack, who was named the Burleson Rotary Club's 2013 Unsung Hero. Mack is a recreation center coordinator at the BRiCk, the City-owned recreation center. Mack assists in the front line supervision and support of 24 part-time customer service attendants. Peter Krause, director of parks and recreation, said Mack " is the employee who will work longer and harder for someone else, no matter the reason." Read More |
Burleson makes Top 20 for best cities for homeownership in Texas
What are the best cities for homeownership in Texas, according to NerdWallet, a consumer advocacy site? Count Burleson among the top 20. NerdWallet crunched the numbers to find the best cities in Texas for homeownership. The criteria included, are homes available, can you afford to live there, and is the area growing? Only cities with a population of 25,000 or higher were included. As of August 2013, the number of people who call Burleson home hit the mark at 39,010. Burleson ranked 17th out of 20 in the study. The top city was Little Elm, a suburb of Dallas. Other DFW cities in the rankings included Frisco (four), Wylie (seven), Mansfield (nine), Allen (10), McKinney (12), Keller (13), Flower Mound (14), and Southlake (18). Read More |

Look up when you drive past Honda of Burleson. Thanks to a partnership with Clear Channel, the City increased promotion of City events and programs in FY 2013 (Oct. 1, 2012-Sept. 30, 2013) via free public service announcements on the digital billboard on I-35W, in front of Honda. Clear Channel promoted each of the more than 30 City events in FY 13. Thank you Clear Channel for helping spread the word! |
Martin is Civilian Employee of the Year
Katlyn Martin has been working for the Burleson Police Department for less than two years, but she has already made an impression. She was awarded the department's 2013 Civilian Employee of the Year award. Martin also earned a lifesaving award for a call she took in which she was able to help a suicidal man. And she and fellow communications specialist Maria Gonzales were commended for the professional way they handled a shots fired call at a home. No one was injured and the shooter was arrested. According to the nomination letter, Martin "puts forth tremendous effort in all aspects of her job. As one of the newest civilian employees she has quickly proven her ability and dedication to the city." Read More |
Have you met your new neighbors?
Have you met your new neighbors? According to the 2013 development update delivered at a Developers Roundtable on Feb. 14, a total of 360 homes with an average value of $192,000 and an average size of 2,450 square feet were built in Burleson in 2013. The number of homes was up 25 percent over 2012 figures. The average value was up 30 percent compared to 2012. New homes built in Burleson in the 2000s averaged between $100,000-$130,000. Over half of the new homes were over 3,000 square feet, more than twice the percentage seen in 2012. Read More |
You're running out of time to pay fines
Have you paid those overdue court fines to the City of Burleson's Municipal Court? Now's the time. Arrests will be made and unpaid fines will be collected during a Metroplex Warrant Roundup. The court's hours of operation for February have been extended. Regular business hours for the court are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, 8 a.m.-4:30 pm., and Wednesday, 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. On Fridays for the month of February (Feb. 21 and Feb. 28) the court will be open late, 8 a.m.-7 p.m. The court is located inside the Burleson sub courthouse at 247 Elk Dr., Room 114 (across from Burleson High School). Opt in for City's new Everbridge emergency notification system
How will you know if a tornado warning or severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for Burleson? The City of Burleson, in partnership with Everbridge, will contact you. If your name and landline phone numbers are currently listed in the white pages or yellow pages or you previously signed up for the City's Blackboard Connect system, you are automatically in the Everbridge system. Messages can be sent by cell phone, landline, email, text and more, but you must opt in to the Everbridge emergency notification system. Go to the Everbridge page on the City website. Choose how you want to be contacted, the number of phones and email addresses you want included, and the order in which you want to be contacted. You can include your home and work address, your child's school and/or daycare, or your parents/grandparents' home. You will be asked to confirm that you received the alert. Once you confirm, Everbridge will stop contacting you for that incident. You can set a "quiet time" for messages (tornado messages will be sent regardless of quiet times) and choose which weather warnings you want to receive. Read More |
Learn about Business Plan Basics
The Burleson Public Library is hosting free workshops for entrepreneurs and small business startups. No registration is required. All workshops are on Saturdays, 11 a.m.-1 p.m., at the library, located at 248 S.W. Johnson Ave. The Feb. 22 workshop, "Business Plan Basics," is presented by John Simmons, a local business owner, entrepreneur, and small business coach. Ninety-five percent of small businesses don't have the one thing that investors and experts consider essential to success - a business plan. Sherman tapped as top supervisor
He was named Rookie Officer of the Year for the Burleson Police Department in 1993. On Jan. 30, 2014, Sgt. Bob Sherman was named the 2013 Supervisor of the Year. According to the nomination letter, Sherman "is a strong leader amongst his patrol shift and a leader in the hostage negotiations team. He takes great pride in his career and it shows." Sherman is certified as a master peace officer, field training sergeant, a Texas Commission on Law Enforcement instructor, mental health peace officer, hostage negotiator and first aid/CPR instructor. He is the team leader for Burleson's Crisis Negotiation Team and he teaches classes for the department's Citizens Police Academy and the Citizens On Patrol academy. Read More |
Let's talk about transportation Feb. 26
The Greater Johnson County Transportation Coalition will host its next general meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 26, at 9 a.m. at the Cleburne Conference Center, 1501 W. Henderson St. The meeting will include an update from the North Texas Tollway Authority and a special program on City/County Transportation presented by Cleburne Police Chief Rob Severance. The meeting is open to the public. The GJCTC's mission is to plan and advocate for improved transportation in the greater Johnson County area. Need a new curbside recycling bin?
Did your green curbside recycling bin turn up missing? The replacement cost for stolen or lost green curbside recycling bins for the City of Burleson is $10. If the bin is damaged due to handling by the recycling company (throwing them around and breaking them), the recycling company replaces those bins at no charge. Call the City's public works department at 817-426-9830 and request a replacement bin due to damage by the company. A bin will be delivered to you on the Friday following your call. If anyone wants more than one bin, they can buy them for $10 each. Residents who want a lid for their bin can get them, at no charge, at the Municipal Service Center located at 725 S.E. John Jones Dr. The center is open 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday-Friday. Spread the word! |
Basic CPR is on the agenda Feb. 22
If you want to learn how to do basic CPR, the Burleson Fire Department is hosting free basic CPR classes on Saturdays, 9 a.m.-noon, at Fire Station #1, 828 S.W. Alsbury Blvd. The dates are Feb. 22, March 22, April 26, May 31, June 14, July 12, Aug. 30, Sept. 27, Oct. 25, Nov. 29 and Dec. 13. You must be at least 15 years old. Participants will receive a certificate. The three-hour course includes very basic and easy hands on CPR, basic first aid, and instruction on an AED. Sign up for Spring Break Fun Camp!
Do you have plans for spring break? Your preteens (6-12 years old) can have fun at the BRiCk's Spring Break Fun Camp, March 10-14. The camp is 7 a.m.-6 p.m. Campers will participate in group games, arts and crafts, rock climbing and team building events. Bring a sack lunch and tennis shoes every day, and your swimsuit and towel, Tuesday-Friday. Fees range from $115 to $130 for all five days or ask about single day registration ($30-$40) by calling the BRiCk at 817-426-9104. |
Deadline to file for council is Feb. 28
Friday, Feb. 28, is the last day to file for a seat on the Burleson City Council. Two of the four races are contested. Robert Gray filed for Place 6, currently held by Ronnie Johnson. Ken Shetter drew challenger John Glen Garrison for the post of mayor. Rick Green, Place 2 and Matt Aiken, Place 4, are unopposed. Green, 49, is a realtor. Aiken, 33, is an attorney. Johnson, 68, is retired. Gray, 36, is a police officer. Shetter, 42, is an attorney/executive director. Garrison, 51, is employed in lawn care. Candidate packets for the May 10, 2014, City election are available at Burleson City Hall, 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday-Friday. Applicants must be at least 18 years old on the date they apply for a place on the ballot; a citizen of the United States; a qualified voter of the city; a resident of the city or have resided in the city for at least one year immediately preceding the date of the election; and not be delinquent in the payment of property taxes due to the City of Burleson.
